The ascent of the Byzantine icon to the sanctuary, held on the last Sunday of May in Pantelleria
The Procession of the Madonna della Margana is one of the religious events most deeply rooted in the identity of Pantelleria, the large volcanic island in the Province of Trapani, Sicily. At the heart of the celebration is the venerated icon of the Madonna, considered the patron protector of the island. Attributed to Byzantine origins, it has been mentioned in historical records for centuries. This devotion is tied to an isolated sanctuary nestled in the Pantescan countryside, a destination for pilgrimages and the heart of local spirituality.
According to tradition passed down through generations, the sacred painting was aboard a ship that, upon reaching Pantelleria, was caught in a storm and could not continue its journey. The sailors decided to leave the image of the Madonna on the beach. Later, when it was loaded onto a donkey to be transported, the animal suddenly stopped at a specific spot on the hill, thus indicating, according to legend, the place where the sanctuary should be built. The name Mร rgana is thought to derive from the Arabic marg, meaning 'cultivated field': for this reason, the Madonna is also invoked as the protector of fields and harvests.
Pantescan devotion is marked by a dual rite that spans the year. On the last Sunday of October, the icon is carried in a solemn procession from the sanctuary to the Mother Church in the town center, where it remains for the winter months. On the last Sunday of May, the reverse rite takes place, the so-called ascent: the image returns to its rural church, accompanied by a long procession of islanders as it climbs toward the sanctuary hill.
The ascent begins at the Mother Church of Pantelleria Centro following the celebration of Holy Mass. The procession winds through the heart of the town along a traditional route including Via Mazzini, the Lungomare Borsellino, Borgo Italia, and Via San Nicola, before taking the road that leads to the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Margana. To ensure the rite takes place safely, the Municipality of Pantelleria issues specific ordinances every year to temporarily suspend traffic along the affected streets.
More than just a liturgical appointment, the Procession of the Madonna della Margana represents a vital part of the identity of the entire community of the Municipality of Pantelleria. The participation of the faithful, families, fishermen, and visitors testifies to a deep bond between the island, its history, and its faith. For those visiting Pantelleria at the end of May, witnessing the ascent of the icon means connecting with the most authentic and traditional soul of this corner of Sicily.
The procession on Sunday, May 31, 2026, renewed the ancient tradition of the ascent. The procession began at 6:00 PM from the Mother Church of Pantelleria Centro, winding along Via Mazzini, Lungomare Borsellino, Borgo Italia, and Via San Nicola up to the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Margana. The organization was managed by the San Salvatore Parish. For the occasion, the Municipality of Pantelleria ordered the temporary suspension of vehicular traffic along the route, allowing passage only for emergency and law enforcement vehicles.

Pantelleria can be reached by plane via the island's airport, which has connections from Trapani and Palermo (and other Italian cities during the summer months), or by sea via ferries from Trapani. The procession takes place in the town center of Pantelleria, which is easily walkable.
