The island's patron saint feast, blending faith, sea, and local traditions

October 16th is a date etched in the heart of every local: it is the day when the island of Pantelleria, located in the heart of the Strait of Sicily in the province of Trapani, pays homage to its patron saint, San Fortunato. Deeply rooted in the island's maritime identity, the festival weaves religious devotion with local folk traditions in a day that brings together the entire town, local clubs, and associations.
San Fortunato, a martyr of the Theban Legion whose relics have been kept in the Mother Church of the SS. Salvatore since the 17th century, became the protector of Pantelleria out of the islanders' gratitude for surviving various calamities. Tradition recalls his miraculous interventions during the 1831 earthquake and the 1891 tsunami, and more recently the protection invoked in 1981, when an underwater eruption north-west of the island caused fear but no casualties: since then, the community has proclaimed him their patron and passed his name down through generations.
The most evocative moment of the festival is the procession of the Saint's statue, which takes place first through the town streets and then by sea. The faithful carry the statue to the pier, where it is loaded onto a 'lancia' boat, followed by a flotilla of local fishing vessels. Off the coast, a prayer is held, and according to custom, a wreath of flowers is cast into the sea to honor the ocean, its inhabitants, and in memory of its victims, before the solemn return of the boats.
Alongside religious rites, the festival preserves the territory's civil and sporting traditions. A highlight is the 'lance pantesche' regatta for the La Mulattiera Prize, organized in collaboration with the Circolo Velico Isola di Pantelleria: an event created to keep the island's maritime culture alive and pass it on to the younger generations. The traditional boats, with sails catching the wind, can also be admired from land at various coastal viewpoints.
Upon the Saint's return, the religious celebration gives way to the town festival: convivial moments hosted by local clubs and associations, play areas for children, live music, and dancing that enliven the square until late at night. It is the moment when the entire community of Pantelleria gathers, uniting the sacred dimension of the day with the joy of shared tradition.
The 2026 edition of the San Fortunato Festival in Pantelleria is expected, as per tradition, on October 16th. At the moment, the dates and official program for this edition have not yet been published by the organizers. The festival is expected to follow the established pattern: religious rites at the Mother Church of the SS. Salvatore, the evocative procession of the Saint by land and sea with the casting of the flower wreath, the 'lance pantesche' regatta for the La Mulattiera Prize, and the evening party in the square. It is recommended to check the channels of the Municipality and the Parish of Pantelleria for updates.
Pantelleria can be reached by plane with scheduled flights from Trapani and Palermo airports, or by sea via ferries and hydrofoils departing from Trapani. On the island, it is best to get around by rental car or scooter.
The heart of the celebrations is the Mother Church of the SS. Salvatore in the center of Pantelleria, from which the procession to the port begins. Evening events are held in the town squares.
The patron saint festival is celebrated every year on October 16th.
Participation in the celebrations and events is free.
