In the heart of the Tuscia region, in Cellere, a small municipality in the Viterbo province of Lazio, the end of autumn brings one of the community's most beloved traditions: the Sant'Andrea Festival. Every year, around November 29th—the eve of the Apostle's feast day—the village streets and the central Piazza Castelfidardo come alive with sounds, laughter, and an ancient ritual passed down through generations.

The «Sant'Andrea» Tradition

The absolute star of the festival is the «Sant'Andrea»: a long string of tin cans tied together, which participants build with patience and imagination. This custom stems from the ancient scampanate (bell-ringing rituals) of Tuscia, when young people on the eve of November 30th would drag noisy strings of cans and metal containers through the streets to make as much racket as possible. According to rural tradition, this din was meant to be heard by the saint and to summon the wind necessary to help the olives fall.

In Cellere, this ritual game has evolved over time into a true creativity competition, where each «Sant'Andrea» becomes a collective work of art to be displayed with pride.

The Competition and Prizes

On the afternoon of the festival, the completed «Sant'Andrea» creations are displayed and evaluated by a jury that awards prizes in several categories:

• Most elaborate «Sant'Andrea», a prize for abundance and patience;
• Most original «Sant'Andrea», dedicated to the inventiveness and imagination of the participants.

The Sant'Andrea Festival is not unique to Cellere: throughout the Tuscia region, the cult of the apostle takes on different but equally deep-rooted forms. In Viterbo, the tradition of chocolate fish is famous, while in other nearby villages, bell-ringing, nursery rhymes, and ritual noises are repeated to ward off evil spirits and face the long winter nights. In Cellere, this heritage has crystallized into the characteristic tin-can competition, which today represents a defining trait of the village's identity.
