The traditional fried pizza festival of Calvi Risorta
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every summer, the town of Calvi Risorta, nestled in the heart of the ancient Cales territory in the province of Caserta, celebrates one of the most authentic symbols of its local cuisine: the pizzonta calena. Promoted by the Pro Loco of Calvi Risorta with the support of the municipality, the event transforms the town center into a vibrant culinary hub where tradition can be savored at every corner.
Pizzonta is a simple, genuine fried pizza, rooted in the traditional 'cucina povera' of Campania. The dough, made from flour, water, yeast, and salt, is fried until golden and crispy, then served piping hot. It can be enjoyed in a savory version, paired with mortadella, cured meats, or cheeses, or as a sweet treat, dusted with sugar or filled with hazelnut cream. It is the perfect communal dish to enjoy while strolling through the festival stalls.
During the evenings, food stalls offer the pizzonta in all its variations, alongside other local traditional dishes, regional wines, and craft beers. There is no shortage of typical desserts and treats for those with a sweet tooth, creating a culinary journey that highlights the best products of the Caserta region.
The soundtrack of the festival is provided by the folk music of Campania: traditional song groups, folk dances, and the iconic tammurriate enliven the evenings. Folklore shows and performances by local groups take the audience on a journey through the cultural roots of the Caleno territory.
The Pizzonta Calena Festival is designed for all ages: alongside the food stalls, visitors will find a dedicated children's area, markets featuring local products and handicrafts, and various entertainment activities. Admission is free, and the atmosphere is that of a genuine village fair, where the pleasure of good food blends with social connection and community identity.
Located along the Via Casilina, Calvi Risorta stands next to the ruins of ancient Cales, a Roman colony of great historical significance. Attending the festival is also a wonderful opportunity to discover a town in the Caserta area rich in history, archaeology, and the flavors of the Campanian hinterland.
