The Easter Monday festival featuring necci and castagnaccio in the Pistoia Mountains
The Sweet Chestnut Flour Festival is the annual event that draws locals and visitors every Easter Monday to the village of Piteglio, located in the municipality of San Marcello Piteglio, in the province of Pistoia, in the heart of the Tuscan Apennines. Long considered a major local celebration, the event honors the product that sustained the communities of the Pistoia Mountains for centuries: sweet chestnut flour, harvested from the ancient forests covering these slopes.
Piteglio is an ancient stone village perched among the woods of the Pistoia Mountains, dominated by the Church of Santa Maria Assunta and its medieval bell tower. During the festival, the historic center comes alive across its squares and alleys, with tasting points set up between Aia Grande, Piazza Fratelli Guermani, and the Casa della Musica.
The heart of the festival is traditional cuisine based on chestnut flour. Starting at 12:00 PM, you can sample:
Throughout the village, you can also taste raw milk pecorino from the Pistoia Mountains, a Slow Food Presidium, along with goat and cow cheeses, ricotta, honey, jams, yogurt, and liqueurs from local producers.
The tastings are accompanied by craft stalls and live music that brings the village to life. In the afternoon, there is an extraordinary opening of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta and the bell tower, a precious opportunity to discover the village's historical heritage. The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Piteglio, which has preserved this gastronomic and popular tradition for years.
The Sweet Chestnut Flour Festival is the ideal way to spend Easter Monday in the open air, immersed in the flavors and landscapes of the Pistoia Mountains, just a few kilometers from San Marcello and Abetone. A simple and genuine celebration, defined by local products, hospitality, and Tuscan Apennine tradition.
The 2026 Sweet Chestnut Flour Festival took place on Monday, April 6, Easter Monday, in the village of Piteglio (San Marcello Piteglio, PT). The stands opened at 12:00 PM with a rustic lunch featuring sausage sandwiches.
Along the village streets, necci, sweet fritters, castagnaccio, and sweet polenta were served, alongside Slow Food Presidium raw milk pecorino, goat and cow cheeses, ricotta, honey, and jams from producers in the Pistoia Mountains.
Piteglio is located in the Pistoia Mountains, part of the municipality of San Marcello Piteglio (PT). By car from Pistoia, follow the SS66 mountain road towards Abetone, then take the turn-off for Piteglio. The nearest train station is Pistoia, from where you can continue by bus or car towards the mountains.
The festival takes place on Easter Monday from 12:00 PM until the evening. Tastings begin at noon; the church and bell tower open in the afternoon.
Wear comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for the village's stone streets. We recommend bringing cash for the stalls. For information, contact the Pro Loco of Piteglio.
