Celebrating the king of the forest in the Pistoia Mountains
When autumn sets the Apennine woods ablaze with color, the village of Cutigliano, part of the Municipality of Abetone Cutigliano in the Province of Pistoia, celebrates the signature product of its territory: the mushroom. The Cutigliano Mycological Festival is a food and wine event organized by Pro Loco Cutigliano that has been drawing enthusiasts, mycologists, and food lovers to the heart of the Tuscan mountains for over twenty years.
For the occasion, the streets of the historic center come alive with stalls and enticing aromas. The most anticipated highlight is the grand mushroom-themed gastronomic tour: during the middle of the day, the village's restaurants and food stands offer dishes featuring the mushroom as the absolute star, perfect for enjoying while strolling through the alleys. There is also the aperifungo, featuring wines from the Pistoia Mountains, and markets showcasing local products and crafts that add color to the village streets.
The scientific and cultural heart of the festival is the mycological exhibition set up in the halls of the Palazzo dei Capitani della Montagna, the historic building that symbolizes Cutigliano. Here, numerous mushroom species collected in the area are displayed with the support of experts from the Pistoia Mycological Association. For those who want to experience the woods up close, the event also offers guided hikes to discover the forest and its bounty amidst the autumn foliage.
The Mycological Festival does not forget the little ones: in the afternoon, autumn workshops are scheduled, featuring readings and hands-on activities designed for children. The day concludes with a now-traditional appointment: the awards ceremony for the most creative basket, showcasing the participants' ingenuity in arranging their harvest.
The festival is part of a rich autumn calendar that, in the Pistoia Mountains, intertwines mushrooms and chestnuts. In Cutigliano, the October mushroom season is an opportunity to discover one of the most charming medieval villages in the Tuscan Apennines, nestled in beech woods and forests that have always provided their most precious fruits. An event that combines gastronomy, nature, and the popular traditions of Tuscany.
The Cutigliano Mycological Festival returns in 2026 on the weekend of October 10-11, confirming the usual autumn appointment dedicated to mushrooms in the Pistoia Mountains. Organized by Pro Loco Cutigliano, the event will once again bring the village's historic center to life, in the Province of Pistoia, with flavors, markets, and activities for all ages.
Based on previous editions, the program traditionally includes the aperifungo with mountain wines, the grand mushroom-themed gastronomic tour during the middle of the day, the mycological exhibition at the Palazzo dei Capitani, markets with local products and crafts, and guided forest hikes during the foliage season.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including precise times and the list of activities, will be published by Pro Loco Cutigliano closer to the event.
