The festival celebrating the buried cardoon of Pioppo, a Monreale agricultural treasure
The Pioppo Carduni Vruricatu Festival is one of the most distinctive gastronomic events in the Monreale district, in the province of Palermo. It takes place in Pioppo, a small village nestled in the upper Oreto River valley, and revolves entirely around the carduni vruricatu, literally the "buried cardoon," a vegetable grown exclusively in this area.
What makes this cardoon so special is the cultivation technique known as blanching: the plant is buried and kept in total darkness for about fifteen days before harvest. Deprived of light, it develops more tender and crunchy stalks, with a color ranging from white to pink and a sweet flavor with a characteristic bitter aftertaste. It is a patient, manual process that is becoming increasingly rare, as it is practiced by only a few expert local farmers.
The first records of carduni cultivation in Pioppo date back to the 1930s. Even today, in the Agrifoglio district, thousands of plants are grown on about seven hectares of land, cared for using traditional methods. Due to its identity value and the artisanal techniques involved, the product has been included in the Slow Food basket, a recognition that highlights its link to biodiversity and Sicilian agricultural culture.
During the festival, Piazza Manzoni in Pioppo comes alive with stalls and enticing aromas. The carduni is offered in a variety of preparations: battered and fried, floured, au gratin, boiled, and served in salads, accompanied by sausage and typical sfince, as well as sweet-and-sour versions and traditional local desserts. The tasting is designed to be accessible to everyone, with a nominal fee.
The festival is about more than just gastronomy. The program includes photography and painting exhibitions dedicated to the Oreto River and the landscapes of the upper valley, folk music performances by local groups, and folkloric entertainment. There is also a specialized seminar on promoting the product and comparing it with other Italian cardoon excellences, demonstrating a festival that blends village celebration with cultural reflection.
Organized by the Forum of the Oreto River and Coast Contract together with the local committee and under the patronage of the Municipality of Monreale, the Carduni Vruricatu Festival is a winter event that brings thousands of visitors to Pioppo, all eager to discover an authentic flavor and a tradition that tells the story of the rural soul of Sicily.
