The festival of bread and street arts in the Arbëreshë district of Rrokat
The Buka Buskers Fest is a celebration of bread and street arts held in the heart of Piana degli Albanesi, a town in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily. The event takes place in the historic Rrokat district, founded over five hundred years ago by Albanian refugees who arrived on the island: among narrow alleys, courtyards, and brightly colored houses, the entire neighborhood transforms into an expansive open-air stage.
The event's name captures its spirit: buka, in the Arbëreshë language still spoken in Piana, literally means "bread." More than just food, bread here is a collective ritual and a symbol of roots, hospitality, and rebirth. The heart of the festival is the buka e horës, the traditional local bread, around which shared knowledge and age-old gestures revolve: an ancient wood-fired oven in the district, which had been closed for over forty years, is relit to bake bread according to the Arbëreshë tradition.
For two days, Rrokat welcomes street artists from all over Italy and abroad. The program blends various forms of folk arts:
The festival is promoted by a local organization with the support of the Municipality of Piana degli Albanesi, the Sicilian Region, the Pro Loco, and local associations. Admission is free, and the atmosphere is that of a community rediscovering itself through its traditions, while celebrating the Arbëreshë linguistic minority, one of the most distinctive features of this corner of Sicily at the gates of Palermo.
The Buka Buskers Fest 2026 returns to the historic Rrokat district in Piana degli Albanesi on Saturday, August 1, and Sunday, August 2, 2026. The format blending Arbëreshë bread tradition with street arts is confirmed: contemporary circus, music, dance, theater, readings, and workshops for all ages will enliven the alleys and courtyards of the neighborhood. The ritual of baking buka e horës bread in the traditional oven is also planned for this edition. Admission is free.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including the artist line-up and schedule, has not yet been published: the organizers will release it shortly on the official website and the event's social media channels.
Piana degli Albanesi is located about 30 km from Palermo. By car, it can be reached via the A29 motorway (Bolognetta exit) or the SS624 Palermo-Sciacca road. Intercity bus connections are available from Palermo. The event takes place in the historic Rrokat district, in the town center.
The event is free to attend. Some workshops with limited capacity may require advance booking.
Wear comfortable shoes to navigate the alleys and stairways of the district. Don't miss the chance to taste the traditional buka e horës bread baked in the wood-fired oven.
