The Pro Loco's open-air painting contest on the Teramo coast
The Pineto Plein Air Painting Competition is one of the most anticipated cultural events of the summer in the town of Pineto, in the province of Teramo, in the heart of the Abruzzo coast. Organized by the Pro Loco Pineto, chaired by Alfonso Mazzocchetti, in collaboration with the local Artisans and Merchants Association and under the patronage of the Municipal Administration, the event attracts dozens of artists every year who challenge each other with brushstrokes in the open air.
Plein air painting is a form of artistic competition where participants paint en plein air, on-site and within a few hours, drawing inspiration from their surroundings. In Pineto, artists set up along the streets and squares of the town, among the seafront, gardens, and most characteristic corners, creating a true open-air workshop that visitors can observe as the works take shape. At the end of the day, the works are exhibited and evaluated by a jury of art critics and historians.
Over the years, the competition has gained an increasingly broad scope, involving over forty artists from various Italian regions and abroad. The event rewards the best works with prizes ranging from top placements to a series of special awards, highlighting both established and emerging talents. The jury, chaired in recent years by art critic Massimo Pasqualone, evaluates technical skill, originality, and the ability to capture the identity of the locations.
Beyond the competitive aspect, the Pineto plein air event is above all a celebration of culture and encounter. The awards ceremony involves city authorities and representatives of local associations, turning the day into a moment of gathering for residents and tourists. The initiative helps promote Pineto and its territory, from the famous Torre di Cerrano to the pine forest that gives the city its name, as a place of art, nature, and hospitality in Abruzzo.
Overlooking the Adriatic and known for its tree-lined promenade and beaches, Pineto is one of the most appreciated seaside destinations in the province of Teramo. The plein air painting competition is part of the city's rich summer event calendar, offering guests a cultural experience that combines art, landscape, and Adriatic tradition.
The 8th edition of the Pineto Plein Air Painting Competition was a great success, with 45 artists arriving from all over Italy and abroad. The jury, chaired by art critic Massimo Pasqualone, awarded the first prize to Walter Marchese (Alessandria), the second to Francesco Costanzo (Fiuggi), and the third to Marina Basaglia (Verona), in addition to fifteen other awards. The initiative was organized by the Pro Loco Pineto, chaired by Alfonso Mazzocchetti, with the Artisans and Merchants Association of Pineto and the patronage of the Municipality. The awards ceremony, hosted by journalist Evelina Frisa, was attended by Mayor Alberto Dell'Orletta and Councilor for Culture Jessica Martella.
The competition is held in the center of Pineto (TE), among squares, gardens, and the seafront. The artists' stations and the location of the awards ceremony are communicated by the organizers each year.
By car: A14 motorway, Pineto-Atri exit. By train: Pineto railway station on the Adriatic line. By plane: Pescara Airport (Aeroporto d'Abruzzo), about 30 km away.
