The Easter Tuesday pilgrimage in Rignano Garganico
The Pilgrimage to the Madonna di Cristo is the most anticipated devotional event in Rignano Garganico, a small village perched at an altitude of about 590 meters in the province of Foggia, Puglia, within the Gargano National Park. Every year, on Easter Tuesday—the Tuesday following Easter—the entire community sets out on a journey toward the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Cristo, an ancient rural chapel located about six to seven kilometers from the town center, nestled among centuries-old olive groves and vast fields of wildflowers.
The sanctuary, of medieval origin, houses a venerated effigy of the Madonna and Child and is at the center of a tradition rooted in over a thousand years of history. Popular devotion attributes numerous miracles to the site, making it one of the most cherished spiritual destinations in the Gargano. The sacredness of the site and its secluded position, between the countryside and the first hills leading up to the village, enhance its charm, attracting hundreds of faithful, as well as curious visitors, every year.
The day begins early in the morning at the Mother Church of the Assunta, a Renaissance-style building in the heart of Rignano Garganico:
Beyond its religious dimension, the pilgrimage retains a strongly popular and convivial character. After the mass and the blessing of the fields, the faithful linger around the sanctuary for picnics and outdoor lunches in the shade of historic olive trees, amidst the blooming meadows of the Gargano spring. Music, fireworks, and the gathering of entire families make this day a moment of collective identity, where the community of Rignano reaffirms its faith and its rural roots.
The festival is promoted by the Pro Loco of Rignano Garganico, which includes it among its most significant annual activities, in close collaboration with the parish. The Municipality of Rignano Garganico recognizes the importance of the event to the point of closing local offices for the holiday. Visiting the sanctuary on this day means immersing yourself in one of the most authentic expressions of popular religiosity in the Gargano and the province of Foggia, set against a backdrop of great scenic beauty.
On April 7, 2026, Easter Tuesday, Rignano Garganico renewed its centuries-old pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Cristo. The day began with mass at the Mother Church of the Assunta and a brass band parade, followed by the procession of the Madonna along the ancient mule track, the revote, down to the chapel in the countryside. A solemn mass was held there with the blessing of the fields, followed by traditional picnics among the olive trees. In the afternoon, the statue returned to the village with a motorcade and fireworks. Among the many pilgrims, the testimony of 81-year-old Rachele De Angelis, who walked part of the path of faith, was particularly moving.
Rignano Garganico can be reached by car via the SS 693 and the roads climbing toward the Gargano; the most convenient train stations are San Severo or Foggia, on the Adriatic line, from which you can continue by car or local connections. The Sanctuary of the Madonna di Cristo is located about 6-7 km from the town center, downhill, and can be reached by car or on foot along the ancient mule tracks for the most devout pilgrims.
The pilgrimage takes place every year on Easter Tuesday, the Tuesday following Easter Sunday.
Participation in the festival and celebrations is free and open to all.
