The Carnival of Pietraperzia, in the heart of the Enna province
The Pietrino Carnival is the signature carnival event of Pietraperzia, a town in the Sicilian hinterland located in the province of Enna, in the heart of Sicily. Every year, between late February and the beginning of Lent, the historic town center fills with colors, masks, and joy, drawing children, families, and associations into a celebration that blends popular tradition with a love for conviviality.
The hub of the festivities is the central Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, which serves as a natural stage for shows, entertainment, and fun. In larger editions, the program includes parades that wind through the town streets, with processions starting from the higher areas of the town and concluding in the main square, where the most anticipated activities take place.
Among the stars of the Pietrino Carnival are the local schools, which participate with their costumed students, along with entertainment groups: clowns, stilt walkers, street performers, and children's dance troupes accompany the festivities with music and shows. It is a family-friendly carnival, designed especially for children and teenagers, who can take center stage in one of the most cherished events of the Sicilian popular calendar.
The Pietraperzia Carnival is part of the rich carnival tradition of the Enna province, where many inland towns — from Barrafranca to Regalbuto, from Valguarnera to Nicosia — celebrate with parades, masks, and collective rituals. In Pietraperzia, a town also known for its evocative Good Friday procession and its farming traditions, the Carnival represents a moment of gathering that renews the bond between the community and its roots, combining spectacle, play, and local identity.
The 2026 Pietrino Carnival in Pietraperzia took place in a scaled-down format, concentrated over two days: Saturday, February 14, and Tuesday, February 17, from 5 PM to 8 PM, in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele. The decision to forgo traditional parades, dances, and masked processions was born as a gesture of solidarity toward the communities of the Nisseno area, particularly Niscemi, which were struck by natural disasters.
The funds allocated for the event were dedicated to children's entertainment, with a program designed for kids and teenagers. On Saturday, February 14, a Simpson-themed inflatable slide and the "Last One Standing" inflatable game were set up, accompanied by popcorn, cotton candy, stilt walkers, clowns, and balloons. Tuesday, February 17, featured an inflatable galleon and a mechanical bull, again with popcorn, cotton candy, clowns, and entertainment.
The initiative was organized by the Municipality of Pietraperzia, with Mayor Salvuccio Messina and Councilor Carlo Falzone. Admission to all activities was free.
Pietraperzia is located in the province of Enna, in the heart of Sicily. By car, it can be reached via the SS117bis and the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (Caltanissetta/Enna exit), continuing along the provincial roads toward the town. The nearest train stations are in Enna or Caltanissetta, from where you can continue by bus or car.
The festivities are concentrated in the historic center, with the main hub being Piazza Vittorio Emanuele. During the parades, some streets in the center may be closed to traffic.
Participation in the activities in the square is free.
