Music, sound research, and the arts in the upper Cervo Valley
The Piedicavallo Festival is one of the most evocative cultural events in Piedmont. It takes place in Piedicavallo, a tiny village in the upper Cervo Valley, in the Province of Biella, nestled within the Biellese Alps. Since 1991, the festival has brought great music and artistic research to a secluded mountain setting, where live performances engage in a dialogue with the landscape. In 2026, the event celebrates its 36th edition, presented under the subtitle Sorgenti. Music, Research and Arts Festival.
The festival is divided into two complementary sections. The historic SARV section is dedicated to classical and chamber music: a journey ranging from Gregorian chant to Mozart, and from contemporary music to jazz reinterpretations. The name derives from the ancient name of the stream that flows through the valley, a continuous flow that accompanies the musical journey. The Lüria section, established in 2021, is the space for sound experimentation and performing arts: workshops, listening sessions, dance, and widespread performances, often entrusted to female voices and figures from the international research scene.
The festival venues are an integral part of the experience: churches, temples and sanctuaries, village theaters, mountain huts, breweries, and open-air natural spaces. This choice transforms the entire village and the valley into a widespread stage, where the audience walks from one concert to another immersed in nature. The organizers' philosophy is clear: to maintain the intimate, high-quality character of the event without pursuing growth that would betray its values.
The Piedicavallo Festival is promoted by Sotterranea APS, a cultural association from Biella, in collaboration with the Municipality of Piedicavallo. The 2026 edition is also part of the Torino Jazz Festival Piemonte circuit, confirming the growing prestige of the event, and has received support from the Culturhub grant by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Biella. For the public, it is an opportunity to discover an authentic mountain Piedmont, far from the major circuits, where music and artistic research find a natural home.
The 36th edition of the Piedicavallo Festival confirms its two-section structure in the heart of summer 2026. The Lüria section, dedicated to sound research and performing arts, is confirmed from August 21 to 23, 2026, and is part of the Torino Jazz Festival Piemonte circuit. The historic SARV section, featuring classical and chamber music, is expected in the weeks prior, as in past editions. The festival confirms itself as one of the most significant spaces for musical experimentation in Piedmont, in a rare and evocative alpine setting.
The sound research and performing arts section is confirmed, with a program focused on the exploration of the voice and electronics, in dialogue with the research jazz scene. Among the artists announced as part of the Torino Jazz Festival Piemonte:
The proposals are in line with the focus on female voices and presence that runs through the programming.
The historic classical and chamber music section is expected in the first two weeks of August, as per the tradition of previous editions. The detailed program and the complete calendar of the 36th edition will be announced on the festival's official channels.
The return of the Lüria section (August 21-23) with a focus on voice and electronics, and the presence of Ute Wassermann, Roxane Métayer, and Mira, as part of the Torino Jazz Festival Piemonte.
Piedicavallo is located in the upper Cervo Valley, about 30 km from Biella. By car, it can be reached by taking the SP100 road of the Cervo Valley from Biella. By train, the reference station is Biella San Paolo, which is then connected to the village by local bus lines (connections in the upper valley are limited: a car is recommended).
Many events are free or by donation; some concerts require a ticket. Updated information on rates and reservations is published on the official website and the festival's social media channels.
You are heading into a mountain environment: bring comfortable shoes and a warm layer even in summer, as evenings at high altitude can be cool. Book your accommodation in advance, given the village's limited capacity.
