About Mid-August Procession

Every August 15th, on the Feast of the Assumption, Gressoney-Saint-Jean revives one of its most evocative traditions: the Mid-August Procession in Walser costume. After the 10:30 AM Holy Mass, the faithful parade through the village streets, with women wearing the splendid traditional Gressoney costume, one of the most beautiful in the Aosta Valley, recognizable by its red woolen skirt, embroidered black apron, and the unmistakable gold filigree cap. An event that intertwines faith, identity, and German-speaking culture at the foot of Monte Rosa.

The Assumption in the Walser Heart

August 15th, the feast of the Assumption, is one of the most cherished dates in Gressoney-Saint-Jean, a Walser village at the foot of Monte Rosa, in the Lys Valley (Aosta Valley). After the 10:30 AM Holy Mass, the community brings to life a traditional procession through the village streets, an occasion where ancient costumes and the identity of the German-speaking minority re-emerge.

Traditional Walser Costumes

The most anticipated moment is the parade in Walser costume. The women of Gressoney wear one of the most beautiful costumes in the entire Aosta Valley: a long red woolen skirt, a white blouse, a black apron decorated with lace, a black velvet bodice embellished with gold embroidery, and, above all, the unmistakable gold filigree cap. An outfit that is still worn today on the most important occasions of the year.

A Community Celebration

The procession is a choral rite that unites the religious and identity dimensions: the village youth carry the sacred statue in procession, followed by the women in costume. It is one of the moments when Walser culture is displayed in its most authentic form, before the eyes of residents and visitors.

A Living Tradition

Together with similar celebrations in neighboring Gressoney-La-Trinité, the Mid-August Procession of Gressoney-Saint-Jean represents one of the symbolic events of the Walser summer, capable of conveying this community's deep connection to its history, its language, and the mountains.
