Masks, allegorical floats, and tradition in the heart of the Turin belt
The Pianezza Carnival is one of the most cherished winter events in the town of Pianezza, located just outside Turin in the heart of the western metropolitan area. For a few weeks, the historic center fills with confetti, streamers, masks, and allegorical floats in a celebration that involves the entire community: schools, families, associations, and the Pro Loco work together to bring a tradition that renews itself every year to life.
The symbolic heart of the festival is Gianduja and Giacometta, the historic Piedmontese masks that represent the city in Pianezza. Tradition dictates that during the investiture ceremony, municipal authorities symbolically hand over the keys to the city to the two masks, who become the protagonists and guardians of the Carnival until the end of the festivities. It is a solemn yet joyful moment, held in the Town Hall, which officially opens the carnival season.
The most anticipated event remains the parade of allegorical floats, which travels through the town streets with colorful structures, masked groups, music, and entertainment. Among the floats, there are also inclusive and participatory projects born from the work of schools and local entities, such as the Carcarin float (Inclusive Carnival Float), designed to involve people with sensory or communication disabilities. The parade is the moment when all of Pianezza takes to the streets to applaud the floats and celebrate together.
The Pianezza Carnival is a free and deeply popular event, organized by the Pro Loco Pianezza in collaboration with the municipality and local associations. In addition to the parades, the program includes social gatherings such as the serving of polenta and sausage, dancing, entertainment for children, and school-related initiatives. It is the ideal opportunity to discover the authenticity of a Piedmontese village carnival, far from the crowds but rich in tradition and human warmth, just a few kilometers from Turin.
