Peasant traditions come to life in the hamlet of Pianello, in the Madonie mountains

The Pianello Wheat Festival takes place in the hamlet of the same name in the municipality of Petralia Soprana, in the province of Palermo, nestled in the heart of the Madonie Park at an altitude of over a thousand meters. Promoted by the Circolo Ricreativo Culturale Sportivo Pianellese with the patronage of the municipality, the event has become a highly anticipated late-summer fixture in Sicily, celebrating a millenary tradition: the cultivation and processing of wheat, around which the life of inland rural communities revolved for centuries.
The highlight of the festival is the re-enactment of the ancient stages of wheat processing. On the village threshing floor, visitors can witness "a mituta" (the harvest), "a pisata" (the threshing with mules circling the wheat), "a trebbiatura" (the threshing), and "a spartenza" (the division of the harvest). Actors in period costumes, historical agricultural tools, and ancient folk sayings immerse the public in the atmosphere of past field work, in a journey that is both a memory and an educational experience of Madonie peasant culture.
Wheat is also the star of the table. The village housewives prepare bread, fresh pasta, baked desserts, and savory local specialties, offered for tasting along the streets of Pianello. Local street food accompanies the evenings, allowing visitors to savor typical products made from Sicilian durum wheat, an authentic symbol of the territory's agricultural identity.
The festival is also a community celebration: among the most beloved events are the traditional games, such as the "carruzzuna" race (racing with hand-built carts), sack races, and tug-of-war. The evenings conclude with folk and traditional music, with roving bands and accordions enlivening the village squares until late at night.
Visiting the Wheat Festival is also a great opportunity to discover Petralia Soprana, one of Italy's most beautiful villages, and the evocative landscape of the Madonie Park in Sicily. The event enhances an intangible heritage made of gestures, words, and flavors that new generations preserve and pass on.
For the 2026 edition of the Pianello Wheat Festival in Petralia Soprana, official dates and the program have not yet been released at the time of writing. The event usually takes place over summer evenings, featuring the traditional threshing re-enactment, tastings of wheat-based products, folk games, and folk music. We recommend checking the channels of the Circolo Ricreativo Culturale Sportivo Pianellese and the Municipality of Petralia Soprana for updates on the 2026 dates and program.
