The ancient propitiatory dance and the re-enactment of the Madonie wedding procession
In the village of Petralia Sottana, located in the province of Palermo within the Madonie Park, one of Sicily's most evocative folk rituals is renewed every summer: the Ballo Pantomima della Cordella. It is the only folkloric expression inscribed in the Intangible Heritage Register of the Sicily Region, a recognition that attests to its identity and anthropological value for the entire Madonie community.
At the center of the scene stands a pole decorated with wheat stalks, around which twelve pairs of dancers in traditional costume perform, one for each month of the year. Holding the curdeddi, or colorful ribbons, the dancers weave them to the rhythm of the tarantella, creating ever-changing patterns before unraveling them by dancing backwards. The dance figures evoke the succession of the four seasons and the cycle of wheat, from autumn sowing to summer harvest: an ancient form of propitiation and thanksgiving for a good harvest, linked to the myth of the goddess Ceres.
The dance is part of the re-enactment of the ancient Wedding Procession, a period-costume parade with richly caparisoned horses that winds through the alleys of the historic center. The procession stages the bride's departure from her father's house to her new home, accompanied by her mother-in-law, bridesmaids, and farmers: a living tableau of traditional Sicilian rural life. The previous evening features the 'a zita serenade, a performance of theater, song, and music that recounts the rituals of rural courtship and marriage.
The Festival of Popular Traditions develops around the main event, with several days of festivities animating the village squares: shows, music, dance, and the Mediterranean Folklore Gathering, which brings folkloric groups from various parts of the Mediterranean to Petralia Sottana. It is the perfect opportunity to discover the crafts, gastronomy, and folk music of the Madonie.
The event has its roots in 1936, when the knight Francesco Tropea gave scenic form to a much older agrarian rite. Since then, the tradition has been preserved and handed down by the Pro Loco "Francesco Tropea" and the Ballo della Cordella Association, who still manage the event today. For those visiting inland Sicily in summer, the Ballo della Cordella is an unmissable appointment to understand the rural and festive soul of the Madonie villages.
The 2026 edition of the Ballo Pantomima della Cordella is confirmed for Sunday, August 16, 2026, in Petralia Sottana, following the custom that sets the date for the first Sunday after Ferragosto. As every year, the Madonie village will host the re-enactment of the ancient Wedding Procession, the dance of the twelve couples with colorful ribbons, and the 'a zita serenade on the previous evening, as part of the Festival of Popular Traditions.
The detailed 2026 program, including times, performance locations, and groups for the Mediterranean Folklore Gathering, has not yet been published: the organizers will release it in the weeks before the event. Participation in outdoor events is free.
Petralia Sottana is located in the heart of the Madonie, in the province of Palermo. By car, it can be reached via the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (Tremonzelli exit) and then via the SS120. The reference railway station is Castellana Sicula-Petralia, on the Palermo-Catania line.
The event is traditionally held on the first Sunday after Ferragosto (August 15th), with events of the Festival of Popular Traditions spread over the preceding days.
Access to outdoor shows, including the procession and the dance, is free.
It is advisable to arrive early to find a spot along the procession route in the historic center and at the Municipal Sports Field where the dance takes place. In August, days can be hot: a hat and water are recommended.
