The half marathon along the Adriatic seafront of Pescara
The Pescara Half Marathon – Maratonina del Mare is the premier spring running festival in Pescara, the capital of the province of the same name in Abruzzo. Every May, the Adriatic city transforms into a massive race course that links the famous seafront to the network of avenues and squares in the city center, attracting both competitive runners and enthusiasts from all over the peninsula and beyond.
The event offers various distances designed to accommodate every type of participant: the competitive half marathon covering the standard 21.097 km, a 10 km non-competitive race, a 6.5 km fun run, and a 2.5 km family walk. In this way, the Maratonina del Mare is not just an appointment for trained athletes, but a true community event that involves children, sports clubs, and casual walkers alike.
The route is one of the most highly regarded in the Abruzzo running scene: flat and fluid, it is ideal for those chasing a personal best. The start is located in the Teatro D'Annunzio area on the seafront, with the finish line near the Auditorium Flaiano. Athletes run along the Papa Giovanni XXIII and Colombo seafronts, pass by the Rotonda delle Canarie, cross the Pescara River via the pedestrian and cycle bridge, and head into the center through Piazza Italia, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, and Corso Umberto I, in a constant alternation of sea views and city streets.
With over two thousand athletes at the starting line and total participation nearing three thousand people across the various races and walks, the Maratonina del Mare is one of Pescara's most cherished sporting events. The city center streets are closed to traffic, and the city rallies around the runners and walkers with aid stations, entertainment, and enthusiastic crowds cheering along the seafront.
Established in the mid-2010s, the event has grown with each edition to become a classic of the spring running calendar, officially recognized by FIDAL. For those who love running while breathing in the Adriatic breeze, the Pescara Half Marathon is an unmissable seasonal highlight.
The 2026 edition of the Maratonina del Mare confirmed the multi-distance format that has made the event popular in Pescara. The competitive half marathon was sold out, a sign of the event's growing appeal in the Abruzzo and national running scene.
The start and finish were located in the seafront area, between the Teatro D'Annunzio and the Auditorium Flaiano, with the city rallying around the runners for a Sunday of outdoor sports.
From the start at Teatro D'Annunzio, athletes run along the Papa Giovanni XXIII and Colombo seafronts, pass by the Rotonda delle Canarie and via Andrea Doria, cross the river on the pedestrian bridge (Ponte Flaiano), and continue towards Piazza Italia, via Renato Paolucci, Piazza Duca D'Aosta, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, Corso Umberto I, via Cesare Battisti, via Leopoldo Muzii, and viale della Riviera, finishing near the Auditorium Flaiano. The half marathon covers the route twice.
Registration for non-competitive events is also available on-site on May 15th and 16th in the afternoon at Piazza Salotto. For the half marathon, FIDAL membership or a RunCard is required.
Pescara is well-connected: Pescara Centrale station is just a short walk from the seafront, while the Abruzzo Airport is only a few kilometers from the center. By car, it can be reached via the A14 motorway (Pescara Nord or Pescara Ovest-Chieti exits). During the race, numerous road closures and traffic diversions are planned in the center and along the seafront.
The competitive half marathon requires FIDAL membership or a RunCard. Registration for the non-competitive events (6.5 km run and 2.5 km family walk) is also available on-site on May 15th and 16th in the afternoon at Piazza Salotto. Further information and details can be found on the official event website.
As this is a spring race by the sea, it is advisable to arrive early to pick up your race bib and enjoy the Pescara seafront. There is a wide selection of hotels and accommodation facilities along the Adriatic coast.
