The multidisciplinary festival bringing the Santa Croce Monumental Complex in Florence to life
Genius Loci – Discovering Santa Croce is one of the most evocative cultural festivals on the Florentine calendar. Promoted by the Controradio Club Association together with the Opera di Santa Croce and Controradio, with the collaboration of the La Nottola di Minerva association and the support of the Municipality of Florence as part of the Estate Fiorentina, the festival transforms the Santa Croce Monumental Complex for several days into a living stage where music, words, and art engage with one of the symbolic sites of the city and Tuscany.
What makes this event unique is the choice of locations. Events take place simultaneously in three extraordinary spaces within the complex: the Cenacolo, the Second Cloister, and the Pazzi Chapel, a Renaissance masterpiece attributed to Filippo Brunelleschi. The public is invited to move between these settings, discovering or rediscovering corners of the monument usually visited only as tourists, here restored to their vocation as spaces for encounter and emotion.
Genius Loci is a self-proclaimed multidisciplinary project: classical and contemporary music, jazz, singer-songwriters, electronic music, literary readings, talks with writers, philosophers, and intellectuals, theatrical performances, and dance. Each edition revolves around a theme that runs through the entire program, creating a dialogue between contemporary languages and the Franciscan soul and centuries-old history of the basilica.
The trademark of Genius Loci is the sunrise concert: at the first light of day, the Second Cloister fills with an audience for an intimate and unforgettable musical appointment that closes the festival in a spirit of wonder. In past editions, the festival has attracted tens of thousands of spectators, with events regularly selling out.
Set in the Municipality of Florence, the capital of Tuscany, Genius Loci is also an opportunity to experience one of Italy's most beloved monuments in a different way. The Basilica of Santa Croce, a pantheon of Italian glory and a place of deep Franciscan spirituality, provides the backdrop for a festival that combines cultural outreach, great music, and heritage appreciation, in full harmony with the city's artistic identity.
The ninth edition of Genius Loci – Discovering Santa Croce will be held in Florence from September 24 to 26, 2026, at the Santa Croce Monumental Complex. The festival's structure is confirmed: recitals, talks, and performances in dialogue with the beauty and spirituality of the place, distributed between the Cenacolo, the Second Cloister, and the Pazzi Chapel, with the usual sunrise concert closing the event.
The detailed program and the artistic line-up for the 2026 edition will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the festival. Admission will be free with mandatory reservation subject to availability.
The Santa Croce Monumental Complex is located in Piazza di Santa Croce, in the historic center of Florence, just a few minutes' walk from the Duomo and Piazza della Signoria. From the Florence Santa Maria Novella train station, it can be reached on foot in about 20 minutes or by public transport.
