About Genius Loci

Genius Loci – Discovering Santa Croce is a multidisciplinary festival that lights up the Santa Croce Monumental Complex in the heart of Florence every September. For three days, the Cenacolo, the Second Cloister, and the Pazzi Chapel become a stage for concerts, talks, readings, and performances, all in dialogue with the beauty and spirituality of the site. A hallmark of the festival is the evocative sunrise concert that closes the event. Admission is free with mandatory reservation.

A festival in the monumental heart of Florence

Genius Loci – Discovering Santa Croce is one of the most evocative cultural festivals on the Florentine calendar. Promoted by the Controradio Club Association together with the Opera di Santa Croce and Controradio, with the collaboration of the La Nottola di Minerva association and the support of the Municipality of Florence as part of the Estate Fiorentina, the festival transforms the Santa Croce Monumental Complex for several days into a living stage where music, words, and art engage with one of the symbolic sites of the city and Tuscany.

The venues: Cenacolo, Second Cloister, and Pazzi Chapel

What makes this event unique is the choice of locations. Events take place simultaneously in three extraordinary spaces within the complex: the Cenacolo, the Second Cloister, and the Pazzi Chapel, a Renaissance masterpiece attributed to Filippo Brunelleschi. The public is invited to move between these settings, discovering or rediscovering corners of the monument usually visited only as tourists, here restored to their vocation as spaces for encounter and emotion.

A multidisciplinary program

Genius Loci is a self-proclaimed multidisciplinary project: classical and contemporary music, jazz, singer-songwriters, electronic music, literary readings, talks with writers, philosophers, and intellectuals, theatrical performances, and dance. Each edition revolves around a theme that runs through the entire program, creating a dialogue between contemporary languages and the Franciscan soul and centuries-old history of the basilica.

  • Classical, contemporary, and jazz concerts in the cloisters and the Cenacolo
  • Talks and readings with nationally renowned authors and thinkers
  • Performances, theater, and dance
  • The traditional sunrise concert, the most anticipated closing moment of the event

The sunrise concert

The trademark of Genius Loci is the sunrise concert: at the first light of day, the Second Cloister fills with an audience for an intimate and unforgettable musical appointment that closes the festival in a spirit of wonder. In past editions, the festival has attracted tens of thousands of spectators, with events regularly selling out.

Florence, Santa Croce, and Tuscany

Set in the Municipality of Florence, the capital of Tuscany, Genius Loci is also an opportunity to experience one of Italy's most beloved monuments in a different way. The Basilica of Santa Croce, a pantheon of Italian glory and a place of deep Franciscan spirituality, provides the backdrop for a festival that combines cultural outreach, great music, and heritage appreciation, in full harmony with the city's artistic identity.

Genius Loci — edition 2026

The ninth edition of Genius Loci – Discovering Santa Croce is scheduled in Florence from September 24 to 26, 2026. Promoted by the Controradio Club Association and the Opera di Santa Croce, the festival returns to the Monumental Complex with its usual multidisciplinary path through the Cenacolo, the Second Cloister, and the Pazzi Chapel, culminating in the traditional and evocative sunrise concert.

The ninth edition of Genius Loci – Discovering Santa Croce will be held in Florence from September 24 to 26, 2026, at the Santa Croce Monumental Complex. The festival's structure is confirmed: recitals, talks, and performances in dialogue with the beauty and spirituality of the place, distributed between the Cenacolo, the Second Cloister, and the Pazzi Chapel, with the usual sunrise concert closing the event.

The detailed program and the artistic line-up for the 2026 edition will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the festival. Admission will be free with mandatory reservation subject to availability.
