Wooden stalls, local crafts, and Abruzzo flavors in the 'brick village'
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every winter, the historic center of Penne, in the province of Pescara, transforms into a festive and luminous path thanks to the Christmas Markets. Decorated wooden stalls, fairy lights, and the notes of Christmas music accompany residents and visitors along Viale di San Francesco, where the area dedicated to artistic crafts and food and wine products is concentrated. It is one of the most cherished events in the winter calendar of the Vestina area, capable of attracting families and curious visitors from all over Abruzzo.
Penne has joined the club of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy and is affectionately called the "city of brick," due to the terracotta that covers noble palaces, ancient churches, and medieval gates. Walking through the cobblestone alleys during the holidays, from the scenic Porta San Francesco to the town squares, adds a special charm to the markets: the stalls are set within an intact architectural frame that tells centuries of history of this Abruzzo town.
Along the route, there is space for artisan stalls, gift ideas, Christmas decorations, and traditional specialties. The food area offers typical local flavors, including holiday sweets and local products, while the atmosphere is made warm and welcoming by lights and music. The initiative takes place every weekend, giving visitors more opportunities to experience the Christmas spirit in the village.
The markets are born from the collaboration between the Municipality of Penne and local associations, which animate the center every year with decorations, activities for children, and festive moments. The event is part of the city's wider Christmas program, which includes lights, decorations, and appointments dedicated to families, helping to enhance the historical heritage and local traditions of Abruzzo.
The event embraces the holiday season, typically from December 8th to January 6th, with openings on weekends. It is the ideal occasion for a Christmas stroll through the alleys of one of the most evocative villages in the province of Pescara, combining artisanal shopping, gastronomy, and the discovery of a historic center full of charm.
The Penne Christmas Markets will return, as is customary, during the Christmas period with wooden stalls, crafts, and local products along Viale di San Francesco. At the moment, the official dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been published: the program will be defined by the Municipality of Penne and local associations in the weeks preceding the holidays.
Penne is located in the hinterland of the province of Pescara, in Abruzzo. By car, it can be reached from the A14 motorway (Pescara-Villanova or Val di Sangro exit) continuing inland; the coast and the Pescara train station are about 40 km away. The markets are spread along Viale di San Francesco, in the historic center.
Access to the markets is free. Openings are generally concentrated on weekends during the Christmas period; it is advisable to check updated dates and times with the Municipality of Penne or the channels of the organizing associations.
Wear comfortable shoes for the cobblestone streets of the village and clothing suitable for the winter temperatures of the Abruzzo hinterland.
