The village of Cugnoli transforms into a living nativity scene filled with markets, lights, and the flavors of Abruzzo.

Every late November, the small village of Cugnoli, in the province of Pescara, transforms into a true living nativity scene thanks to Natale al Borgo, the Christmas event promoted by the Borgo in Movimento ETS association. For two days, the streets, alleys, and especially the fondaci โ ancient stone spaces usually closed throughout the year and reopened only for this occasion โ become the heart of a charming journey filled with lights, art, and flavors. It is one of those events that restores the most intimate meaning of the holidays, far from the frenzy of large shopping centers.
The centerpiece of the event is the artisan market, which brings together dozens of selected artisans from Abruzzo and other Italian regions: ceramicists, sculptors, illustrators, and creators of wooden objects, textiles, nativity scenes, and Christmas decorations enliven the alleys with unique creations. There is also live carving of Maiella stone by master sculptors who share the history and nature of the territory, as well as the creation of nativity scenes using moss, carved wood, and logs.
The atmosphere is made magical by the music: from gospel songs to melodies drifting down from the bell tower, along with the notes of traditional bagpipers and roving performances that accompany visitors along the route. For the little ones, there are creative workshops and animated readings, along with the lighting of the large Christmas tree and light installations that illuminate the village's alleys, windows, and doorways.
The culinary side celebrates Abruzzese tradition: hot roasted chestnuts, mulled wine, crรชpes, cotton candy, and traditional sweets warm up the winter days among the stone alleys. Cugnoli, with its ancient houses and cozy corners, offers the perfect setting to rediscover the pleasure of simple things and experience an authentic Christmas in the heart of Abruzzo.
At the moment, the Borgo in Movimento ETS association has not yet announced the official dates for the 2026 edition of Natale al Borgo in Cugnoli. Based on previous editions, the event is expected to take place on the last weekend of November, with the usual program of artisan markets, gospel music, bagpipers, children's workshops, and culinary specialties among the alleys and ancient stone cellars of the historic center. The detailed program will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
The event takes place in the historic center of Cugnoli (ZIP code 65020), in the province of Pescara, Abruzzo. Entry to the market and events is free.
In recent editions, the event has been held from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm on both days.
Cugnoli can be reached by car from the A25 motorway (take the exits towards Val Pescara) and from the provincial roads of the Vestina area. It is recommended to park in the designated areas on the outskirts of the village, as the historic center is pedestrian-only.
