Folk games, cazzarielli, and inter-town challenges in the heart of the Valle Caudina
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
During the first week of August, Via Roma, the main thoroughfare of Buccianoโa small town in the province of Benevento, Campaniaโis cleared of cars and filled with long tables, cheering crowds, and game stations. This is Pazzienn Pazzienn, an event where the N'ata Storia cultural association blends traditional sports, gastronomy, and local culture over three festive evenings.
The name, in the local Sannio dialect, evokes the very spirit of playing: here, the challenge is not between professional athletes but between neighboring communities, and the audience follows the events from the sidewalk with the same passion they would reserve for a stadium. It is one of those festivals where the entire village, from children to the elderly, gathers in the streets until late at night.
The festival has its roots in the Sagra dei Cazzarielli, the event that made Bucciano famous throughout Campania thanks to cazzarielli, the traditional Sannio water-and-flour gnocchi. After its initial run, the event evolved several times, including a stint under the name Bucciano in Festa, before being relaunched as Pazzienn Pazzienn, which reached its fourth edition in 2025. Regional festival calendars often still refer to it by its old name, but it remains the same celebration, in the same location, organized by the same group.
The heart of the event lies in the traditional games that pit four teams representing Bucciano, Airola, Moiano, and Luzzano against one another. The challenges take place in the street in a spirit of healthy competition and camaraderie, with the leaderboard remaining open until the winning team is crowned on the final night.
The culinary aspect is not just a side dish; it is the other half of the festival, remaining tied to the dish that made Bucciano famous. The stalls set up along Via Roma offer simple and generous village cuisine.
Behind the festival is the N'ata Storia cultural association, founded in May 1995 by a group of young people from Bucciano with the goal of reconnecting with the town's past while maintaining a modern and inclusive outlook. Over its thirty years of activity, in addition to the Sagra dei Cazzarielli, it has produced theatrical performances, research on local history, and territorial discovery itineraries such as Sentieri Aperti. In 2025, the association's anniversary became part of the festival program itself.
Regional festival calendars place the 2026 event in the first week of August, once again on Via Roma in Bucciano and organized by N'ata Storia. At the moment, however, the exact dates and the program for the evenings have not been released: it is advisable to check the association's announcements and local press in the days immediately preceding the event before traveling.
With just under two thousand inhabitants, a territory of about eight square kilometers, and a town center at an altitude of 276 meters, Bucciano is one of the villages of the Valle Caudina, in the southwestern corner of the province of Benevento, a short distance from Airola and Moiano. The patron saint is Saint John the Baptist, celebrated on June 24th. For those visiting inland Campania in the summer, Pazzienn Pazzienn is the perfect opportunity to experience an authentic street festival, not built for tourists, and to taste a dish that is hard to find elsewhere.
Regional festival calendars confirm the event will take place during the first week of August 2026, on Via Roma in Bucciano, in the province of Benevento, organized by the N'ata Storia cultural association. The exact dates, times, and evening schedule have not yet been released.
We will update this page as soon as the organization publishes the official dates and program.
