Three days of faith, brass band concerts, and fireworks in the heart of Irpinia

The Venticano Patronal Feast is the most anticipated event of the year for this small town in the province of Avellino, Campania, overlooking the Calore Valley and crossed by the ancient Appian Way. For three days in early September, the town suspends its daily routine: church bells ring out, sacred images are adorned with votive offerings, and the community—including families who have moved away but return specifically for the occasion—gathers between the parish church and the central squares. The program is organized by the S. Maria and S. Alessio Parish in collaboration with the Festival Committee and the Municipality of Venticano, blending moments of intense popular devotion with public entertainment.
In Venticano, the patronal feast honors three distinct figures together:
The liturgical calendar begins with a solemn preparatory novena at the end of August and concludes with the memorial of the Most Holy Name of Mary, a few days after September 8th. Every celebration is accompanied by the parish choir.
The heart of the feast lies in its two processions. The first, on the evening of September 7th, carries the image of Saint Lucy through the streets. The second, on September 8th, is the longest and most attended: the statues of the Madonna and Saint Alexis are paraded through every street in the afternoon, amidst decorated balconies, festive lights, and a marching band. It is a ritual that marks the collective memory of Venticano and is passed down from generation to generation.
The secular side of the festivities follows the great Southern Italian brass band tradition: throughout the feast, brass bands and wind orchestras perform symphonic and operatic programs in the town center. Alongside classical concerts, there are lighter popular events, theatrical and musical shows, and tributes to Neapolitan song. The grand finale is the fireworks display, which illuminates the valley and officially closes the festivities: it is the moment the entire town pours into the streets, eyes turned toward the sky.
Events are distributed across the town's main public spaces: Piazza Monumento ai Caduti, which hosts the main stage, Piazza Santa Maria, Piazza A. Verardo next to the town hall, Piazza Pio, and the Cavea Teatrale.
The patronal feast concludes the municipal summer program, ViviAMO Venticano, which fills the town from July to September with culture, music, folk traditions, sports, and entertainment. The same calendar includes the Venticano Theater Festival, the film festival dedicated to Mario Puzo, the Ham, Wine, and Lamb Festival, Youth Day, Children's Day, traditional tournaments, a non-competitive race, and the Beeropoli beer festival.
Beyond its patronal feast, Venticano is known in Irpinia for its tradition of trade fairs; local studies trace this history back to the 15th century, and the Sample Fair remains a regional reference point today. This vocation is reflected in the local cuisine: ham, lamb, and wines from the Calore area accompany all the town's events, including the patronal feast. Located just a few kilometers from Benevento, it is a corner of inland Campania worth visiting even outside of festival days.
Those looking for an authentic patronal feast will find exactly that in Venticano: a community of just over two thousand inhabitants staging its devotion with brass bands, fireworks, and processions. The atmosphere is vibrant, from late afternoon until night, with free admission.
The 2026 edition of the Venticano Patronal Feast is announced as part of the ViviAMO Venticano — Summer Events 2026 program, presented by the Municipality of Venticano: a calendar that involves Piazza Monumento ai Caduti, Piazza Santa Maria, Piazza Pio, and the Cavea Teatrale from July to September with events dedicated to culture, music, folk traditions, sports, and entertainment.
For the month of September, the schedule lists, alongside the finals of sports tournaments, the 19th Youth Day, Children's Day, the non-competitive race, and the Beeropoli event, the patronal festivities with brass band concerts and fireworks, following the formula established over the years.
At the moment, neither the exact dates nor the detailed religious and civil program for the 2026 edition (artist names, times, guest bands) have been published. Those wishing to plan their visit can follow the official channels of the Municipality of Venticano and the parish, where the program is usually released at the end of August.
