The patronal feast of Binetto, held on the first Tuesday of March
The Madonna Santissima di Costantinopoli is the patron saint and protector of Binetto, a small town of a few thousand inhabitants nestled among the vineyards, olive groves, and almond orchards of the hinterland southwest of Bari. Her feast day traditionally falls on the first Tuesday of March and represents the most heartfelt moment of the year for the entire community: a precious opportunity to strengthen the sense of belonging and bring traditional customs passed down through generations back to the town square.
The bond between Binetto and the Madonna di Costantinopoli dates back to 1784, when the Virgin was credited with the miracle of preserving the town's crops from a frost that had ruined the fields in neighboring areas. Since then, the community has venerated her as its protector. The cult of the Madonna di Costantinopoli, widespread in many parts of Southern Italy, recalls the ancient capital of the Eastern Roman Empire and the Marian icons once kept there.
The focal point of the celebrations is the Mother Church of Santa Maria Assunta, built between 1198 and 1203 and considered a typical example of Apulian Romanesque architecture: it features three naves, decorated apses, a 16th-century baptismal font, and valuable frescoes. The procession with the effigy of the Virgin departs from here, accompanied by the band and civil and religious authorities through the streets of the historic center.
For years, religious rites have been accompanied by the Calzone di cipolla and wine festival, which enlivens Piazza Umberto I in the days leading up to the patronal feast. The onion calzone is one of the most iconic specialties of Bari's gastronomy: a rustic pastry filled with spring onions, raisins, olives, and sometimes anchovies, best enjoyed with a glass of local wine. The festival combines taste, music, and conviviality, attracting visitors from neighboring towns as well.
The very name of Binetto derives from the Latin vinetum, meaning vineyard, testifying to an ancient agricultural vocation. A village in the Metropolitan City of Bari, in Puglia, Binetto preserves a compact medieval historic center that fills with lights, stalls, and devotees during the feast days. The community also celebrates Saint Crescenzio the Martyr as a secondary patron on the last Sunday of August.
The 2026 Patronal Feast of Binetto combined, as per tradition, religious rites, gastronomic moments, and community initiatives over several days, culminating on Tuesday, March 3rd.
The civil celebrations opened on Saturday, February 28th with the Calzone di cipolla and wine festival in Piazza Umberto I, enlivened by performances from the groups Queen Dance and Il ballo รจ vita. Sunday, March 1st featured CURI-AMO BINETTO, an environmental initiative hosted at Villa d'Amely. Tuesday, March 3rd, the patron saint's day, saw the morning band parade, holy masses, the solemn evening Eucharistic celebration, the procession with the effigy of the Madonna di Costantinopoli, the handing over of the city keys, and the concluding fireworks display.
Binetto is located in the Metropolitan City of Bari, in Puglia, about 20 km southwest of the regional capital. By car, it can be reached via the SS 96 Bari-Altamura road, taking the provincial turn-offs towards Grumo Appula and Bitetto. The most convenient train station is served by the Ferrovie Appulo Lucane lines; the reference airport is the Karol Wojtyลa Airport in Bari-Palese.
The patronal feast is celebrated on the first Tuesday of March, with civil celebrations and the Calzone festival taking place in the days immediately preceding it.
Participation in religious rites, the procession, and public square performances is free.
