Three days of bread, ancient grains of the Daunia region, and sourdough in Orsara di Puglia
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Bread Festival is a culinary and cultural event held in Orsara di Puglia, a village in the Monti Dauni area of the province of Foggia, in the Puglia region. For three days, the town celebrates bread as a symbol of identity, memory, and community, with a program that combines hands-on workshops, tastings, performances, and moments of intergenerational sharing.
At the heart of the festival is the promotion of the ancient grains of the Daunia region and the tradition of sourdough, passed down from family to family. The common thread is the ancient "Pane e Salute" straw oven, located on Via Caracciolo and in continuous operation since 1526: it is considered the oldest oven in Puglia, and in 2026 it celebrated 500 years of activity, a testament to how deeply rooted baking is in the soul of Orsara.
The program alternates between hands-on experiences and festive moments. Baking workshops guide adults and children through the art of handmade pasta, the preparation of biscuits and taralli using ancient grain flours, and baking bread and pizza in a wood-fired oven. There are also experiential activities for children, designed to introduce the little ones to the culture of bread and wholesome food.
The Bread Festival is promoted by the Municipality of Orsara di Puglia with the support of the Puglia Region, as part of the effort to promote the culinary traditions of the Monti Dauni territory. Beyond its gastronomic appeal, the event carries a message of combating food waste and intergenerational inclusion, bringing bread back to the center as a humble yet precious staple.
For those visiting the interior of Puglia, the Bread Festival is the ideal opportunity to discover an authentic village, away from mass tourism routes, and experience a tradition that has endured for five centuries.
At the moment, the Municipality of Orsara di Puglia has not yet released the dates and program for the 2026 edition of the Bread Festival. Based on previous editions, the festival is generally held in the first days of August and offers baking workshops with ancient Daunia grains, tastings of local products, experiential activities for children, and live music evenings, all centered around the historic "Pane e Salute" straw oven from 1526.
The detailed program will be published closer to the event: this page will be updated as soon as the organization releases official information.
