The San Rocco Festival is the heartbeat of summer in Candela, a town in the Monti Dauni area of the province of Foggia, in northern Puglia. San Rocco, a pilgrim traditionally invoked as a protector against epidemics, is the patron saint venerated by the local community, which dedicates some of the most intense and well-attended days of the village calendar to him every mid-August.
For three days, the village is transformed: the streets of the historic center light up with luminarie (decorative lights), stalls and food stands are set up, and Piazza Plebiscito becomes the natural stage for the evening festivities. It is an event that weaves together the sacred and the popular, drawing not only locals to Candela but also emigrants who return to their hometown specifically to relive this tradition.
The most solemn moment is the procession in honor of San Rocco, which winds through the town accompanied by a brass band and the participation of the faithful. The statue of the saint is carried through the streets amidst songs and prayers, in a ritual that renews a bond of devotion passed down through generations. Religious celebrations in the parish church mark the days with solemn masses and moments of quiet reflection.
Alongside the religious rites, the festival offers a rich program of concerts and shows. Every evening, Piazza Plebiscito hosts performances by Italian music artists, turning the patronal celebration into a true popular festival. The format, curated by the Municipality of Candela, alternates devotional tradition with entertainment evenings capable of attracting audiences from across the entire Monti Dauni region.
The festival is also the perfect opportunity to discover Candela, once an important commercial hub of the Capitanata thanks to its fair, and today a peaceful village overlooking the valley. During the days of San Rocco, the town rediscovers its vitality: between food festivals, exhibitions, and side events of the Candela summer, the patron saint's celebration remains the moment that best captures the identity and sense of community of this corner of Puglia.
In 2026, Candela will once again renew its appointment with its patron saint San Rocco, traditionally celebrated in mid-August with religious services, a procession, and shows in Piazza Plebiscito. At the moment, the official dates and the 2026 program have not yet been published: the detailed calendar, including the artists for the musical evenings, is usually announced by the municipal administration in the weeks preceding the festival. This page will be updated as soon as the program is made public.
The celebrations take place in the historic center of Candela (FG), with the main hub in Piazza Plebiscito and the parish church.
By car: Candela is served by the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway junction (Candela exit) and is located near the intersection with the A14. By train: the most convenient stations are Cerignola and Foggia, which are connected to the town by local bus lines.
The festival is traditionally held in mid-August, around the feast day of San Rocco (August 16).
All religious events and concerts in the square are free and open to the public.
