Faith, devotion, and community spirit in the heart of the Sannio region

In Arpaise, a small town in the province of Benevento, Campania, mid-August is the time when the community truly comes together. The solemn festivities in honor of Saint Roch of Montpellier, the town's patron saint, are the highlight of the local calendar. They are more than just a religious event; they are a time for families to reunite, for emigrants to return home, and for the squares to fill with music, lights, and the enticing aromas of Sannio cuisine.
With only a few hundred residents, Arpaise sits on a hillside ridge about eleven kilometers south of Benevento. This intimate scale is the festival's greatest strength: nothing is staged for tourism; everything is born from the parish, the Festival Committee, and the genuine participation of the residents. For those seeking the authentic Italian patronal feast experience, Arpaise is a precious gem.
Saint Roch, a 14th-century French pilgrim traditionally invoked against epidemics, is one of the most venerated saints in Southern Italy. In Arpaise, this devotion runs deep: the parish church, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Roch, and Saint Sebastian, overlooks Piazza Chiesa in the town center. While the liturgical feast falls on August 16th, the celebrations span several days, culminating in a grand finale.
One detail captures the essence of this festival better than any other: the Mass for Emigrants, celebrated on the morning of August 16th. It is a ritual that explicitly honors those who have left and those who return, turning the patronal feast into a moment of reconciliation with one's roots.
The journey toward the festival begins with the novena, marked each morning by Eucharistic Adoration and Lauds, followed by the Holy Rosary and Mass in the late afternoon. Celebrations are not limited to the main church; they also involve the Madonna delle Grazie Church in the Casalpreti district and the Padre Pio Oasis, which hosts moments of adoration and the solemnity of the Assumption of Mary on August 15th.
The evening procession is the emotional heart of the festivities: the statue of the patron saint travels through the village, illuminated by artistic lights, followed by the faithful with candles, pausing for prayers and hymns along the way.
Alongside the liturgical program, the secular festivities take place in Piazza Matteo Renato Donisi. For three consecutive evenings, the square becomes the village's living room, featuring live music from traditional Campanian folk groups and food stalls managed by the Committee, where visitors can taste typical Sannio dishes and products.
The morning of the final day is marked by the marching band, which travels through the village streets with a traditional musical tour: a sonic signal that the festival has reached its most important day. The celebrations conclude with a fireworks display, eagerly awaited by the entire town and the surrounding hamlets.
In recent years, the festival has extended with a beloved new tradition: the White Dinner on the steps of the church in Piazza Chiesa. With tables set outdoors, a white dress code, and dishes brought from home to be shared, this simple idea has turned the end of the festivities into a massive, extended family dinner that grows in popularity every year.
Visitors can take the opportunity to discover a lesser-known corner of the Sannio region. The Terranova di Arpaise district houses the sanctuary dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian, who are celebrated with great fervor in September. The municipal territory is a landscape of districts, olive groves, and vineyards, an area renowned for its wine and oil production. Benevento, with its Arch of Trajan and Roman Theater, is just a few minutes' drive away, making the Arpaise festival a perfect stop on an itinerary between the Sannio capital and its surrounding hillside villages.
For the summer of 2026, neither the official dates nor the program for the festivities in honor of Saint Roch of Montpellier in Arpaise, in the province of Benevento, have been published yet. The events page of the Municipality, which in previous years hosted the poster and the document with the full program, currently only shows the previous edition.
This is a standard situation for patronal feasts in small Sannio towns: the final calendar depends on the organization of the parish and the Festival Committee and is often communicated just a few weeks, sometimes only a few days, before the start of the celebrations. The liturgical feast of Saint Roch remains fixed on August 16th, a date that in recent years has coincided with the opening of the secular program in Piazza Matteo Renato Donisi.
Those wishing to attend can follow updates on the official website of the Municipality of Arpaise, on the channels of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Roch, and Saint Sebastian Parish, and in the local Sannio press, which traditionally gives ample space to the announcement of the festivities.
By car: Arpaise can be reached from Benevento, about 11 km to the south, via the provincial roads following the Sabato valley. From Naples, the drive is approximately 50 km. During the festival, the historic center is partially closed to traffic for the procession; it is advisable to park at the edge of the village.
By train: The reference station is Benevento, well-connected to Naples, Caserta, and Foggia. From there, continue by car or local bus services.
By plane: Naples-Capodichino Airport is about an hour away by car.
All religious events and evening square activities are free of charge. Only food and drinks at the stalls are for purchase, at affordable prices.
