Saint Onuphrius, co-patron of Sutera

In the heart of inland Sicily, in the province of Caltanissetta, the village of Sutera clusters around the white gypsum cliff of Mount San Paolino. Every year, on the first Sunday of August, the community celebrates Saint Onuphrius, the anchorite venerated as the town's co-patron alongside Saint Paulinus. It is one of the most deeply felt religious observances in the Sutera calendar, weaving together popular faith, historical memory, and a landscape of extraordinary beauty.

The nocturnal procession of the reliquary

The festivities begin on Saturday evening with one of the festival's most evocative sights: the nocturnal procession of the silver reliquary of Saint Onuphrius, accompanied by a torchlight parade that illuminates the alleys of the historic center. The precious reliquary is a masterpiece of Sicilian Baroque art: a wooden chest covered in embossed and chased silver foil, crafted by the master goldsmith Francesco Rivelo, bearing the engraved date of 1649. The urn is adorned with angels and scenes illustrating the life of the hermit saint.

The Procession of Miracles

Sunday morning features the highlight of the event: the Procession of Miracles, which winds through the ancient medieval cluster of Giardinello. The name stems from a deep-rooted devotion: Saint Onuphrius is invoked as the protector of expectant mothers, and the faithful traditionally bring their children close to the sacred relics to seek blessings and grace. In the late afternoon, the procession concludes with the return of the reliquary to the mountain summit, ideally closing the day of celebration.

One of Italy's most beautiful villages

The festival is also an opportunity to discover Sutera, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy. The town preserves its medieval layout and the ancient Ràbato district of Arab origin, while the Sanctuary of Saint Paulinus dominates the view over the central Sicilian valley from above. The narrow streets, historic churches, and glimpses of the hilly landscape provide a natural backdrop for the sacred rites.
