The patronal feast of Valledolmo and the 'Agosto Valledolmese', in the heart of Sicily

The Saint Anthony of Padua Festival is the patronal celebration of Valledolmo, a small town of just over three thousand inhabitants perched in the hills of the Metropolitan City of Palermo, in the heart of inland Sicily. Unlike the national liturgical feast on June 13th, the Saint is celebrated here in the height of summer, around August 18th, a period that local tradition has dubbed the "Agosto Valledolmese".
According to municipal records, the festival has been held under the patronage of the local administration "since time immemorial," with events spanning the entire month of August. Solemn religious rites have always been paired with leisure activities and various shows, designed for both residents and the many emigrants who return from abroad at this time of year. The festival has thus always been a moment of reunion and rediscovery of one's roots for those who have moved away.
The heart of the festival is the religious program, which culminates in the solemn procession of the statue of Saint Anthony of Padua through the streets of the historic center. The Saint's fercolo (processional float), accompanied by the faithful, winds through the town amidst prayers, moments of devotion, and the choral participation of the entire community. It is the most heartfelt and anticipated moment of the entire Valledolmo summer.
Alongside the devotional aspect, the Agosto Valledolmese offers musical performances and evening entertainment that enliven the squares and streets of the center. Concerts, exhibitions, and various initiatives turn the town into a meeting point for residents and visitors alike, in a festive atmosphere that blends the sacred and the profane, in keeping with the best tradition of Sicilian patronal feasts.
Located at an altitude of about 750 meters, Valledolmo is known for its agricultural production, particularly wine grapes and 'siccagno' tomatoes, and preserves a historical-architectural heritage that includes the Church of the Puritร and the Count's Palace. Participating in the Saint Anthony of Padua Festival means discovering an authentic corner of inland Sicily, far from the major tourist circuits, where popular faith and community traditions remain intact.
The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: the festival is traditionally held around August 18th. It is recommended to check the program on the official channels of the Municipality of Valledolmo as the event approaches.
