A festival that reverses migration

In Acquaviva Platani, a hilltop village in the province of Caltanissetta in the heart of Sicily, the first Sunday of August has been dedicated for generations to the Madonna delle Grazie. This is no ordinary patronal feast: it is a celebration of the Madonna, venerated as the patroness of emigrants—those locals who left the village throughout the 20th century in search of work abroad. During these days, the migration flow is reversed: those who left return, houses are reopened, streets fill with voices and rediscovered dialects, and the village experiences one of the few moments of the year when it is crowded and vibrant.

The countryside church and the procession

The heart of the solemnity is the small church of the Madonna delle Grazie, located outside the town center, nestled in the Acquaviva countryside, which becomes a place of pilgrimage in August. Following the Eucharistic celebration, the statue of the Madonna and Child is carried in an evening procession along the so-called Vie dei Santi (Streets of the Saints), accompanied by a brass band. It is a slow and intense procession, marked by stops in front of houses, prayers, and gestures of popular devotion; upon the return of the statue, the town's sky lights up with fireworks, the most anticipated and photographed moment of the day.

The Notte Bianca and the Acquaviva Summer

Religious solemnity intertwines with secular festivities: during the days of the Madonna delle Grazie, the traditional Notte Bianca (White Night) of Acquaviva Platani takes place. On this evening, the village squares—from Piazza Municipio to Piazza Plado Mosca—transform into open-air stages featuring live music, dance parties, Latin American rhythms, traditional ballroom dancing, and DJ sets until late at night. It is the most youthful and festive highlight of the entire Acquaviva Summer, the calendar of events organized by the Municipality in August to welcome those who have returned, featuring musical and theatrical performances, historical photo exhibitions, and concerts by local bands and guests.

A community tradition

More than any program, it is the community spirit that makes the Solemnity of the Madonna delle Grazie a special event. Testimonies collected over the years tell of processions stopping in front of the homes of elderly residents unable to leave their houses, so that they too may see the Madonna: a detail that speaks volumes about the intimate relationship between the town and its patroness.
