The devotional countryside festival of the Cermano district in Mussomeli

The Madonna delle Vigne Festival is a devotional event that every year, on the first Sunday of August, brings together the inhabitants of the Cermano district, nestled in the countryside of Mussomeli, in the province of Caltanissetta, in the heart of Sicily. For nearly fifty years, the residents of Cermano have celebrated this day of faith and remembrance in a rural setting that seems to defy time, keeping a tradition passed down through generations alive.
According to local tradition, the festival is rooted in a miraculous event. It is said that a father, who had traveled from Cammarata with his deaf-mute daughter, prayed at length for her recovery. During the return journey, while passing through the vineyards, the child suddenly called out to her father in a clear voice, having regained her speech. In gratitude, a votive chapel dedicated to the Madonna delle Vigne was erected on the site of the miracle in 1975, becoming a destination for devotional pilgrimages ever since.
The heart of the festival is the pilgrimage to the chapel, a tangible sign of the community's Marian devotion. In the late afternoon, the faithful gather in front of the chapel for the recitation of the rosary, followed by an open-air mass celebrated in front of the small rural sanctuary. The liturgy is accompanied by Marian hymns sung by a choir, with the participation of the faithful and local residents who, shouting "Viva Maria," renew an ancient bond with the land and their faith.
One of the most evocative moments is the blessing of the fields, which unites the spiritual dimension with the agricultural life of a community deeply tied to working the land. At sunset, amidst the vineyards and fields of the district, the celebration takes on a special charm, weaving together devotion, reflection, and the memory of ancestors in an atmosphere that recalls the peasant roots of inland Sicily.
Although it is a local event with an intimate, rural character, the Madonna delle Vigne Festival represents an important piece of the identity of Mussomeli and the surrounding area. Far from the major tourist circuits, it preserves the authenticity of the religious festivals of the Sicilian hinterland, where popular piety and attachment to the land continue to meet every summer.
The Madonna delle Vigne Festival returns, as per established tradition, on the first Sunday of August in the Cermano district, in the countryside of Mussomeli (Caltanissetta). The dates and detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: the calendar is generally communicated by the organizing committee and the Pro Loco closer to the event. Following the format of previous editions, the day will feature a devotional pilgrimage to the votive chapel, the recitation of the rosary, an open-air mass accompanied by Marian hymns, and the blessing of the fields at sunset.
