About Saint Michael the Archangel in Tufo

Every May 8th, the village of Tufo, in the province of Avellino, celebrates its patron saint, Michael the Archangel, with a festival blending devotion, folk theater, and conviviality. Following the dawn mass in the Grotta dell'Angelo and the evening procession, Piazza Umberto I hosts "The Expulsion of the Rebellious Angels from Paradise," a sacred drama performed by local residents on a unique two-story stage, now listed in the Intangible Cultural Heritage Inventory of the Campania Region. The evening concludes with fireworks, live music, and tastings of Greco di Tufo DOCG wine.

A patronal feast in the heart of Irpinia

Tufo is a small municipality in the Province of Avellino, in Campania: just under a thousand inhabitants perched among the vineyards of Irpinia, in a landscape of volcanic tuff that gave the town its name and inspired one of Italy's most famous white wines. Once a year, on May 8th, the village fills with visitors from across the province for the Patronal Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel, which here is not just a religious observance but a moment when the community literally stages its own identity.

The Grotta dell'Angelo and the Michaelic cult

The local devotion to the Archangel is ancient and centers on a proto-Christian cave, the Grotta di San Michele Arcangelo, which houses a 17th-century polychrome marble statue. Like many towns in the southern Apennines, Tufo lies along the Michaelic pilgrimage routes that led from Northern Europe to the sanctuary of Monte Sant'Angelo on the Gargano: caves, cliffs, and springs are the typical settings where popular tradition places the appearance of the warrior Angel. It is no coincidence that the feast falls on May 8th, the day of the Gargano apparition, rather than September 29th.

"Quis ut Deus?": the sacred drama of the Expulsion of the Rebellious Angels

The event that makes the Tufo festival unique is "The Expulsion of the Rebellious Angels from Paradise," a sacred folk play performed in Piazza Umberto I after the evening procession. A two-story stage is set up in the center of the square: Paradise at the top, Hell at the bottom. On this vertical set, angels and demons alternate in a dramatic crescendo that culminates in the final clash between Saint Michael and Lucifer, punctuated by the Latin cry "Quis ut Deus?", "Who is like God?".

The script is an original blend of prose, verse, and song, with echoes of Dante's Divine Comedy and Milton's Paradise Lost. The performers are the people of Tufo themselves, of all ages: a child plays Saint Michael, young girls portray the faithful angels, while adults take on the infernal roles—demons, princes of Hell, Pluto, and Lucifer.

A recognized intangible heritage

The tradition has roots that local memory traces back two centuries, while the theatrical form we see today solidified in the early 20th century, when Francesco Carpenito, a self-taught local, was among the first to write down a text previously passed down orally. In 1981, the Pro Loco of Tufo attempted a theatrical reinterpretation with new staging, costumes, lighting, and classical music; in the early nineties, the Festival Committee revised the text to restore stylistic coherence.

On September 4, 2025, the sacred drama was admitted to the Intangible Cultural Heritage Inventory of the Campania Region (IPIC), the regional register created according to the criteria of the 2003 UNESCO Convention: an institutional recognition obtained thanks to the candidacy promoted by the municipal administration of Tufo with the coordination of Cesare Carpenito, councilor delegated to culture.

Bands, fireworks, and Greco di Tufo

A full day of festivities develops around the performance. It begins at dawn, around 7:30 AM, with Holy Mass in the Grotta dell'Angelo; then the marching band—in recent years the "Città di Altavilla Irpina"—pays homage to the fallen at the Monument, parades through the town streets, and closes the morning with a matinée in the square. At noon, in the Mother Church, the Supplication to the Madonna of Pompei is recited; in the afternoon, solemn mass precedes the procession.

After the sacred drama, the square stays lively until night with a fireworks display and concerts: in 2026, the State Police Fanfare and artists from the Neapolitan scene performed. And then there is the gastronomic side: stands set up along the square offer Irpinian dishes and, above all, tastings of Greco di Tufo DOCG, the great white wine that takes its name from this very municipality and is enjoyed here, outdoors, just a few hundred meters from the vineyards where it is born.

What to expect

  • An authentically local festival, not a tourist trap: high local participation.
  • Free admission to religious events and the performance in the square.
  • Two evenings of programming when the calendar allows, with light music and DJ sets on the second day.
  • An excellent opportunity to combine the festival with a winery visit in the heart of the Greco di Tufo area.

Saint Michael the Archangel in Tufo — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Tufo patronal feast took place on Friday, May 8th, and Saturday, May 9th, with two evenings in Piazza Umberto I. The central moment was "The Expulsion of the Rebellious Angels from Paradise" at 8:00 PM on May 8th, followed by the Piromagia fireworks display and a concert by the State Police Fanfare. On May 9th, the square returned to the spotlight with music and DJ sets, amidst food stands and Greco di Tufo DOCG tastings.

Two days of celebration in Piazza Umberto I

In 2026, the festivities in honor of Saint Michael the Archangel were spread over two evenings, Friday, May 8th, and Saturday, May 9th, confirming the formula that combines liturgy, folk theater, and entertainment. The day of May 8th began at 7:30 AM with Holy Mass in the Grotta dell'Angelo, continuing with the arrival of the "Città di Altavilla Irpina" marching band, the salute to the fallen at the Monument, the parade through the village streets, and the matinée in the square.

The sacred drama and the State Police Fanfare

At 8:00 PM, the two-story stage in Piazza Umberto I hosted "The Expulsion of the Rebellious Angels from Paradise," the sacred drama admitted in September 2025 to the Intangible Cultural Heritage Inventory of the Campania Region. This was followed by the fireworks display by Piromagia and, at 9:30 PM, the concert of the State Police Fanfare, conducted by Maestro Massimiliano Profili: a performance presented under the theme "The State Police among the people," in dialogue with the values of order, legality, and justice associated with the figure of the Archangel.

The evening of May 9th

The second day was dedicated to the lighter side of the festival: the awards ceremony for the football match played on May 2nd, the show by artist Nando De Marco, and the DJ set by Luca Frisetti. On both evenings, food stands and Greco di Tufo DOCG tasting areas accompanied the public until late at night.
