About Si qua Fata Sinant

Every early September, the village of Montemiletto in the province of Avellino travels back to 1419. The historical re-enactment "1419 - Si qua Fata Sinant - Assault on the Castle" brings to life Algiasio Tocco's siege of the Castello della Leonessa, then under the rule of Andrea Caracciolo. Three days of costumed processions, flag-wavers and musketeers, military camps, ancient workshops and taverns, fire shows, and jesters culminate in the final battle beneath the castle walls. A signature event for the Irpinia region, organized by the Pro Loco Mons Militum.

A re-enactment that takes Montemiletto back to 1419

In the town of Montemiletto, in the province of Avellino, in the heart of Irpinia and Campania, the first weekend of September is dedicated to one of the region's most popular historical re-enactments: "1419 - Si qua Fata Sinant - Assault on the Castle". The title draws from the Latin motto linked to the village's memory and refers to a specific episode from April 1419, when Algiasio Tocco launched an assault on the Castello della Leonessa, then held by Andrea Caracciolo.

The event is organized by the Pro Loco Mons Militum APS with the support of the Municipality of Montemiletto and has grown with each edition, now involving hundreds of performers, historical groups, and local volunteers. It is not just a standalone show: for three days, the entire historic center is transformed into a medieval village, with increasing attention to costumes, props, and historical accuracy.

The assault on the Castello della Leonessa

The most anticipated moment is the nighttime battle. The historical procession and the militias depart from Piazza IV Novembre, march up to the foot of the castle, and conclude the action at the Porta della Terra, the ancient gateway to the village. Men-at-arms, knights, and crossbowmen engage in choreographed combat while pyrotechnic effects illuminate the fortress walls. In recent years, the assault has been scheduled late in the evening to make the most of the darkness and the castle's natural scenery.

The Castello della Leonessa, with its imposing structure overlooking the Calore valley, is not just the backdrop for the event but also a destination in itself: during the festival, it is opened to the public and narrated by characters in costume who guide visitors through its halls, walkways, and feudal history.

The medieval village: workshops, taverns, and camps

Along the alleys of the historic center, ancient workshops and taverns are reopened, featuring demonstrations of traditional crafts and tastings of dishes inspired by medieval cuisine. Armed companies reconstruct military camps where soldiers display period weapons, armor, and combat techniques. There is also no shortage of food and wine stands run by local associations, offering typical products of Irpinia.

  • Historical processions with nobles, ladies, knights, and commoners
  • Flag-wavers and musketeers visiting from other parts of Campania
  • Falconers and skill games with birds of prey
  • Jesters, minstrels, musicians, and medieval dances
  • Fire-eaters, stilt-walkers, magic acts, and fire shows
  • Guided tours of the castle and the village's monuments

A signature event for Irpinia

"Si qua Fata Sinant" is now one of the events that best captures the bond between an Irpinian community and its historical heritage. The involvement of residents is total: many performers are citizens of Montemiletto who spend the year sewing costumes, preparing sets, and rehearsing battle choreography. The re-enactment has also inspired experiential tourism offerings, allowing visitors to wear period clothing and participate firsthand in the procession and battle scenes.

When it takes place

The event is traditionally held on the first weekend of September, from Friday to Sunday, and is part of the Municipality of Montemiletto's summer calendar. Admission to the festive village is free; some experiences, such as tourist packages, workshops, and medieval lunches, require payment and booking.
