The patronal feast of San Giovanni Rotondo, blending faith, live music, and fireworks
The Patronal Feast of Saint John the Baptist is the most anticipated summer event in San Giovanni Rotondo, a town in the Gargano area of the province of Foggia, in the heart of Puglia. Every year, around the feast of the Nativity of the Baptist on June 24th, the town pauses for three days to honor its patron saint, who gives the city its very name. It is a celebration that weaves deep religious significance with popular culture, filled with music, lights, and shared joy in the town squares.
The spiritual heart of the festival is June 24th, marked by a long series of Eucharistic celebrations in the Mother Church, culminating in the solemn noon mass presided over by the Bishop of the Archdiocese of Manfredonia-Vieste-San Giovanni Rotondo, attended by civil and military authorities. In the late afternoon, the most moving moment takes place: the procession of the statue of Saint John the Baptist, which winds through the historic center along Corso Regina Margherita, Corso Matteotti, Corso Nazionale, and Corso Umberto I, ending at Piazza Padre Pio, accompanied by the faithful, prayers, and marching bands.
Alongside the devotional events, the festival offers a rich program of free artistic performances every evening, hosted primarily in Piazza Europa, which is transformed into a large open-air stage for the occasion. The lineup features concerts by Italian artists, tributes to the greats of Neapolitan and national music, dance performances, and folk music. The main evening concludes with a pyrotechnic show, the famous fireworks that illuminate the Gargano sky and draw large crowds.
During the festival, the center of San Giovanni Rotondo fills with stalls, decorative lights, and markets. The traditional stalls are located in Piazza Europa, which becomes a pedestrian area in the evenings. The city, world-famous as the place where Saint Pio of Pietrelcina (Padre Pio) lived and worked, shows its most authentic and communal side during these daysโthat of a Gargano community deeply connected to its roots and its patron saint.
The Patronal Feast of Saint John the Baptist represents much more than a religious anniversary: it is an opportunity to rediscover the identity of San Giovanni Rotondo and to experience the most authentic side of Puglia, that of village festivals that pass down centuries-old traditions.
The 2026 Patronal Feast brought San Giovanni Rotondo to life from June 23 to 25, confirming the blend of religious celebrations in honor of the Baptist and free evening shows in Piazza Europa. The highlight was June 24, with the solemn mass presided over by Bishop Father Franco Moscone and the procession of the patron saint's statue through the streets of the center. Among the organizational changes, the market stalls were relocated to Piazza Europa, which was made a pedestrian area in the evenings.
San Giovanni Rotondo is located in the Gargano area, in the province of Foggia. By car, it can be reached via the A14 motorway (Foggia or San Severo exit), continuing on the state roads towards the Gargano. The nearest train station is Foggia, which is connected to the town by bus services. The closest airport is "Gino Lisa" in Foggia; major flights are available via Bari.
The festival traditionally takes place around June 24th, the feast of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. Concerts and shows in Piazza Europa are free of charge.
During the festival, there will be changes to traffic and public transport in the town center. We recommend reaching the squares on foot and checking in advance for pedestrian areas active in the evenings.
