Devotion to the patron saint of Bracigliano with processions, brass bands, and fireworks
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Patronal Feast of Saint John the Baptist is the most anticipated event of the year in Bracigliano, a small town of just over five thousand inhabitants in the province of Salerno, Campania. The celebration falls on June 24th, the day the Church commemorates the nativity of Saint John the Baptist: a fixed liturgical date that has always marked the town's calendar. For the occasion, the historic center is filled with lights, stalls, and crowds, as religious celebrations blend with secular festivities in a single day of community spirit.
The bond between Bracigliano and its patron saint is ancient and profound. The parish is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and the Most Holy Annunciation, and the religious identity of the Bracigliano community has been built around the figure of the Precursor over the centuries. The day begins with a Solemn Holy Mass, celebrated in the presence of religious and civil authorities, and continues with the blessing of the community and the faithful's homage to the Saint's statue.
The most intense moment is the procession with the statue of Saint John the Baptist through the streets of the town, accompanied by a brass band—a presence that is far from coincidental in a town known for its deep-rooted band tradition. Local memory preserves the recollection of the historical form of the pageant, which took place on the Sunday closest to June 24th: the protagonists were the priors, two pairs of young people who accompanied the Saint, followed by town authorities and halberdiers. A standard-bearer carried a large municipal banner with the image of the patron, followed by kindergarten children, confraternities, uniformed companies, priests, the band, and many faithful dressed in their Sunday best.
Once the religious portion concludes, the festivities move to the square. The traditional program includes:
Not to be confused with the Mallone Festival, the Bracigliano gastronomic event dedicated to the humble dish made of turnip tops, mountain herbs, potatoes, chili, and olive oil: although linked to the same patron saint, the food festival takes place at a different time in July, within the parish oratory grounds.
The parish church of Saint John the Baptist is one of the oldest buildings in the village: the first documentary evidence dates back to 1309, while the original structure is from the 14th century. After the eruption of Vesuvius in 1631, the building was extensively renovated, and its current appearance—Baroque in style, with a single nave and eight side chapels—dates back to the mid-17th century. This is where the feast begins and where it concludes, with the return of the patron's statue.
Nestled at about 327 meters above sea level in a basin at the foot of the Picentini Mountains, about twenty-five kilometers from Salerno, Bracigliano is a hillside town overlooking the Agro Nocerino Sarnese. It is known for its cherry cultivation and, as mentioned, for its musical tradition. Those arriving for the patronal feast will find much more than a religious recurrence: an opportunity to discover an authentic Campanian village, the 17th-century Palazzo De Simone, the convent of Saint Francis of Assisi, and the flavors of an inland area still little touched by mass tourism.
The last documented edition was held on June 24, 2025. At the time of our check, neither the program nor the official confirmation of the 2026 dates had been published: however, as it is a fixed liturgical recurrence, the feast is traditionally expected in the days around June 24th. It is advisable to follow the channels of the Patronal Feast Committee and the parish for updates.
The 2026 Patronal Feast of Saint John the Baptist in Bracigliano (province of Salerno, Campania) has not yet been officially confirmed at the time of our check: we have not found any announcements, posters, or programs published for this year's edition.
The reference remains June 24th, the day of the nativity of Saint John the Baptist, a fixed liturgical date around which the town has always organized its festivities. Historically, the procession was held on the Sunday closest to the recurrence, which makes a slightly variable placement of the civil calendar possible.
As soon as the Saint John the Baptist Patronal Feast Committee releases the dates and detailed program—religious celebrations, procession times, musical guests, food stalls, and fireworks—we will update this entry. In the meantime, it is advisable to consult the Committee's social media channels and parish notices.
Bracigliano is located in the province of Salerno, about 25 km from the provincial capital, in a basin at the foot of the Picentini Mountains. It is easily reached by car from the roads connecting the Agro Nocerino Sarnese; the nearest train stations and highway exits are located in the towns of the plain, from which you continue via provincial roads. During the feast, the historic center is largely pedestrianized: it is advisable to park in the peripheral areas of the town and continue on foot.
Participation in religious celebrations, the procession, and festivities in the square is free and open to all. Only food and drinks at the stalls are subject to payment.
