The patronal feast of Nociglia, celebrated during the third week of August
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of lower Salento, perched on a gentle hill in the Serre area just a few kilometers from the Adriatic coast, the village of Nociglia (a municipality in the Province of Lecce, Puglia) experiences its most intense moment with the Patronal Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua. The Saint is the patron of the community, and devotion to him has accompanied the life of the town for centuries, so much so that a large part of the local religious and popular tradition is dedicated to him.
The liturgical recurrence of Saint Anthony falls on June 13th, but in Nociglia, the town festival is traditionally postponed to the third week of August. This choice is rooted in a deeply human and identity-based reason: to allow for the return of emigrants, the many Nociglia natives who live and work far away and return to their hometown in the summer. Thus, the festival becomes a great moment of reunion for the entire community, an opportunity to rekindle ties between those who stayed and those who left.
The religious heart of the festival is marked by liturgical celebrations in the Mother Church dedicated to Saint Nicholas the Bishop and by the solemn procession, during which the statue of Saint Anthony is carried through the streets of the historic center, followed by the faithful and accompanied by a brass band. It is the most attended and moving moment, where the community renews its vow to the patron saint.
Alongside the devotional aspect, the festival explodes in its popular dimension. The main streets of the town light up with traditional Salento illuminations, creating light scenographies in the sky; the squares come alive with brass band concerts, pop music shows, and entertainment evenings. The grand finale is entrusted to the fireworks display, with pyrotechnics lighting up the Salento night to bid farewell to the festivities.
The devotion to Saint Anthony in Nociglia is ancient and intertwined with the history of the village, which guards a column dedicated to the Saint and rites passed down from generation to generation. The celebration, which some local sources also refer to as the "Night of Saint Anthony," involves the various districts of the town and reflects the image of a small but strongly united community gathered around its roots.
Experiencing the festival is also an opportunity to discover Nociglia, an authentic village nestled among olive groves that produce the Terra d'Otranto PDO Olive Oil, with its Baronial Palace and evidence of a Messapian and medieval past. During the same summer period, the town's calendar offers other gourmet events, such as the Walnut Festival and the Puccia Festival, which complete the experience of a stay in lower Salento.
The exact dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been made official: the festival is traditionally held in the third week of August. It is recommended to verify the final program with the Municipality of Nociglia or the Religious Festival Committee.
