The patronal feast of Botrugno, blending faith, artistic illuminations, and fireworks
The Patronal Feast of Saints Oronzo, Giusto and Fortunato is the most anticipated event of the year in Botrugno, a small town in the province of Lecce, in the heart of the Salento region of Puglia. Every year, between August 25th and 26th, the town rallies around its three patron saints in a celebration that weaves together faith, tradition, and community spirit.
Devotion to Sant'Oronzo in Botrugno dates back to the 17th century, but the turning point came on February 20, 1743, when—according to tradition—the saint saved the town and the entire Salento region from a devastating earthquake. Since then, Oronzo has been venerated as the primary patron, alongside San Giusto and San Fortunato. Legend has it that Fortunato was Oronzo's nephew and that both converted to Christianity thanks to Giusto, a disciple of Saint Paul. All three suffered martyrdom during Christian persecutions. Alongside the major August festival, Botrugno also commemorates its patrons on February 20 with the winter celebration of the Patronage.
The religious heart of the festival is the solemn mass at the Mother Church of the Holy Spirit, followed by a procession through the streets of the historic center. The statues of the three saints are carried on shoulders amidst the devotion of the faithful, accompanied by the music of brass bands. It is a moment when the entire community reaffirms its identity and roots.
The secular side of the festival transforms Botrugno into an open-air stage. Artistic illuminations light up squares and streets, brass band concerts perform traditional repertoires and concert pieces, while food stalls offer Salento specialties like pittule, friselle, and traditional sweets. The most spectacular moment is the fireworks competition: renowned pyrotechnic firms challenge each other, illuminating the night sky with breathtaking light shows before a large crowd.
The livestock fair is also historically linked to the festival, a testament to the rural and popular soul of the celebration. The Patronal Feast of Botrugno remains one of the most authentic ways to experience the Salento region in summer, balancing the sacred and the profane in a town located about 38 kilometers from Lecce and just a few kilometers from the Adriatic coast.
The Patronal Feast of Saints Oronzo, Giusto and Fortunato returns to Botrugno on August 25 and 26, 2026. The community of the Salento region prepares to renew its devotion to the three patron saints with religious celebrations at the Mother Church of the Holy Spirit and a procession through the streets of the historic center. The detailed calendar of secular events—brass band concerts, illuminations, and the fireworks competition—will be announced by the Patronal Feast Committee closer to the date.
