The religious Ferragosto in the Messapian village of Salento
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every year on Ferragosto, the village of Vaste, in the municipality of Poggiardo (Lecce province, Puglia), celebrates the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, one of the most deeply felt religious observances in the Salento liturgical calendar. On August 15th, the community gathers around the Mother Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie to honor the Virgin Mary assumed into heaven, in a day that combines devotion, folk tradition, and village festivities.
The Solemnity of the Assumption, popularly known as Ferragosto, has been one of the highlights marking summer in the villages of lower Salento for centuries. In Vaste, the festival retains an intimate and authentic character: Eucharistic celebrations in honor of the Madonna, the procession with the statue of the Virgin through the streets of the historic center, and the social gatherings that bring the small town's squares to life. All of this is accompanied, in keeping with the tradition of Puglian patronal festivals, by brass band concerts, illuminations, and fireworks that conclude the celebrations.
A hamlet of Poggiardo, Vaste is one of the most fascinating places in the Salento hinterland. It stands on the site of an ancient Messapian city, one of the most important centers of Messapia around the 6th century BC, today evidenced by the Parco archeologico dei Guerrieri. The village also houses famous frescoed Byzantine cryptsโthe Crypt of Santa Maria degli Angeli and the Crypt of the Santi Stefaniโmaking it a destination of great historical and spiritual value. The Feast of the Assumption fits into this context rich in memory, renewing the bond between the community and its roots every year.
The August 15th celebration is part of the broader summer calendar promoted by the City of Poggiardo, which offers events, food festivals, and evenings between Poggiardo and Vaste throughout July and August. For those spending their holidays in Salento, the festival is an opportunity to experience the authentic atmosphere of the Puglian Ferragosto, between the sacred and the profane. Dates and the detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the organizers.
