The August festival in Ortelle, blending devotion, marching bands, fireworks, and concerts in the square
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Patronal Feast of Saints George and Fortunatus is the most anticipated event of the year in Ortelle, a small town of just over two thousand inhabitants in lower Salento, in the province of Lecce. Saint George, the town's patron, is the object of an ancient devotion, rooted in the community's history since the centuries when Ortelle was part of the County of Castro. Alongside him, Saint Fortunatus is venerated, and for three days in mid-August, the entire village dedicates itself to faith, celebration, and spectacle.
The religious heart of the festival is the procession, led by a musical marching band that accompanies the busts of the saints through the streets of the historic center, followed by a solemn mass in the 17th-century Mother Church of Saint George, with its carparo stone facade and precious Baroque altars. In the evening, the sky over Ortelle lights up with a fireworks display, while the main square, illuminated by traditional light displays, hosts concerts, bands, and moments of civic celebration with singing and dancing late into the night.
The community of Ortelle celebrates Saint George twice a year: the canonical anniversary on April 23rd, with liturgical celebrations, and the major outdoor festival in August, which is the most popular and well-attended, bringing together emigrants and the many Ortelle natives who return to the village for the occasion. It is organized by the Saint George and Saint Fortunatus Feast Committee, which manages the religious and civic program every year.
Ortelle is situated in a land rich in history, between the ancient Messapian cities of Vaste and Castro, and preserves treasures such as the Crypt of the Madonna della Grotta, carved into the rock, and the church of Saints Vitus and Marina. The patronal feast is the ideal opportunity to discover this authentic corner of Puglia, far from mass tourism circuits but close to the seaside resorts of Castro and the Adriatic coast of Salento.
The dates and program for the 2026 edition of the Patronal Feast of Saints George and Fortunatus have not yet been officially announced by the Ortelle Feast Committee. The festival, traditionally celebrated in mid-August, is expected to follow its usual structure: a procession with the busts of the saints accompanied by a musical marching band, a solemn mass in the Mother Church of Saint George, a fireworks display, and evening concerts in the square illuminated by light displays.
This page will be updated with dates and the program as soon as the Saint George and Saint Fortunatus Feast Committee publishes the official details.
The outdoor festival is traditionally held in mid-August (in recent editions from August 17th to 19th). The religious anniversary of Saint George falls on April 23rd.
