The patronal feast of Vaste

The San Gaetano Festival is the most anticipated event of the year for Vaste, a small village in the municipality of Poggiardo, in eastern Salento (Lecce province, Puglia). Every summer, around August 7th—the liturgical day dedicated to Saint Cajetan of Thiene—the community gathers around its patron saint in a celebration that fuses religious and popular dimensions, following the best tradition of Salento patronal feasts.

Faith and tradition

The spiritual heart of the festival is the parish church of Saint Cajetan of Thiene, which guides the faithful through a period of preparation filled with celebrations and prayer. On the day of the feast, the statue of the saint is carried in procession through the village streets, accompanied by local residents and many who return to Vaste for the occasion. It is a moment when the small village rediscovers its identity and connection to its roots.

Summer evenings in Vaste and Poggiardo

The San Gaetano Festival is part of the broader summer calendar that the Municipality of Poggiardo organizes every year for Poggiardo and Vaste, featuring shows, music, and events that bring the historic center to life during the warm months. As is traditional in Salento patronal feasts, the evenings are marked by luminarie (artistic light displays), music, and a festive atmosphere that engages both young and old, with stalls, markets, and moments of conviviality.

Vaste, the ancient Messapian city

Celebrating San Gaetano in Vaste means immersing yourself in one of the most evocative places in Salento. Vaste was an important Messapian city, later Roman and Byzantine, and preserves extraordinary evidence of its past: the Parco dei Guerrieri, a large open-air archaeological area housing the remains of the ancient settlement, and the famous Crypt of the Santi Stefani, a rock-hewn church carved into calcarenite and frescoed between the 11th and 16th centuries. The patronal feast thus becomes an opportunity to discover the historical and artistic heritage of this corner of Salento.
