About Fava Bean Festival

Every late May, the village of Paterno in Avezzano hosts the Fava Bean Festival in Piazza Gagliardi, one of the longest-running food and wine events in Abruzzo. Organized by the Pro Loco Paterno APS, the festival celebrates the fresh fava beans grown in the Fucino plain with a simple, genuine menu: raw fava beans, pasta with fava beans, fried fava beans, prosciutto, pecorino cheese, and wine from the Cantina del Fucino. Enjoy two evenings of rustic flavors accompanied by live music and group dancing in the heart of the Marsica tradition.

The Paterno Fava Bean Festival

The Paterno Fava Bean Festival is one of the most deeply rooted village celebrations in the Marsica region. For over half a century, the small village of Paterno, in the municipality of Avezzano (L'Aquila province, Abruzzo), has dedicated the last weekend of May to celebrating fresh fava beans grown in the fertile Fucino plain. Managed by the Pro Loco Paterno APS, the event is considered one of the region's longest-running festivals and an unmissable appointment for lovers of traditional Abruzzese rustic cuisine.

A treasure of the Marsica land

The absolute star is the Fucino fava beanโ€”tender, sweet, and flavorfulโ€”the fruit of a territory with an ancient agricultural vocation. The Fucino plain, once a drained lake, is now one of Italy's most important fruit and vegetable areas, and the fava bean represents one of its most iconic products. The festival was created precisely to showcase this local excellence and the hard work of those who cultivate it.

A traditional menu

Piazza Gagliardi transforms into the beating heart of Marsica taste, with Pro Loco volunteers busy preparing simple and authentic dishes:

  • Fresh fava beans, to be enjoyed raw to appreciate their sweetness and perfect texture
  • Pasta with fava beans, the festival's signature first course
  • Fried fava beans, crispy and irresistible
  • Local prosciutto and pecorino cheese
  • Wine from the Cantina del Fucino, to complete the culinary experience

Music, dancing, and conviviality

Beyond gastronomy, the Fava Bean Festival is a moment of collective celebration: the evenings are enlivened by live music and group dancing that involve both young and old, in an atmosphere of joy and sharing typical of Abruzzese village festivals.

An identity-defining event for Avezzano

For the community of Paterno and the entire Marsica region, the festival represents much more than a food event: it is a ritual that strengthens village ties and passes down the flavors of the rustic tradition. Every year, it attracts visitors from Avezzano and neighboring towns, curious to rediscover a humble yet precious product and to spend an evening dedicated to taste and conviviality.
