Food and wine, ancient crafts, and traditions among the cellars of Castelmenardo
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Perched on Mount San Mauro, Castelmenardo is one of the best-preserved medieval villages in the Cicolano area, a hamlet of the municipality of Borgorose in the province of Rieti, Lazio. Every autumn, its narrow stone streets become the stage for Flavors of the Ancient Village, a food and wine event that invites residents and visitors to rediscover the authentic flavors of the Salto Valley and traditions passed down through generations.
The heart of the festival is the walk through the village's cellars: from the evocative Piazza della Taverna to the threshing floor, the alleys fill with stalls, performers in period costumes, and workshops recreating ancient peasant crafts. It is a journey into the collective memory of the town, where every corner tells the story of life in times past and every cellar opens its doors to let you savor the fruits of the land.
The absolute stars are the typical products of the Cicolano and Salto Valley: traditional peasant dishes, local cured meats and cheeses, wines, and the village's historic craft beer. Tastings accompany the visitor along the entire route, in a convivial atmosphere that smells of genuine cooking and Apennine hospitality.
Over the years, the event has enriched its offerings with entertainment: live music in the squares, shows, and, starting from the 2025 edition, the Medieval Joust featuring archery, weapon duels, and historical role-playing games designed for both adults and children. It is a way to bring the medieval soul of the castrum to life and involve the entire community in a festive weekend.
Flavors of the Ancient Village is much more than a food festival: it is an opportunity to discover a little-known corner of Lazio, where the Region shows its most intimate and Apennine face, made of mountain landscapes, deep-rooted traditions, and flavors that feel like home.
Following the success of the 15th edition, the food and wine event in Castelmenardo is expected to return in 2026, with the now customary late-October appointment dedicated to the typical products of the Salto Valley, ancient crafts, and the traditions of the Cicolano region. The precise dates and detailed program will be communicated by the organizers via the official Facebook page.
Castelmenardo is a hamlet of Borgorose (RI), in the upper Salto Valley. By car, it can be reached from the A24 Rome-L'Aquila motorway, taking the Valle del Salto/Borgorose exit and continuing along the local roads that climb toward the village. The nearest train stations are Sella di Corno or Rieti, with a final leg by car.
Free admission. The event typically takes place over a weekend in late October, opening in the late afternoon on Saturday and continuing all day Sunday.
We recommend comfortable clothing and suitable shoes for walking through the village's stone alleys. For updated information on dates and the program, please refer to the official Facebook page of the event.
