The autumn Roscetta Chestnut festival in the village of Civitella Roveto
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of the Valle Roveto, in the province of L'Aquila, the town of Civitella Roveto hosts one of Abruzzo's most beloved food and wine events every autumn: Lungo le Antiche Rue. For three days in October, the historic center transforms into a journey of flavors, aromas, and traditions, drawing thousands of visitors from across the region and beyond.
The undisputed protagonist is the Roscetta Chestnut, also known as the Marrone della Valle Roveto, a fruit that symbolizes the woods surrounding the village. During the festival, the chestnut is presented in every variation: roasted, boiled, transformed into desserts, jams, and fritters, or paired with new red wine. Alongside it, you will find products based on truffles and mushrooms, as well as other gastronomic excellences of the Roveto territory.
The charm of the event stems from its setting: the rueโthe ancient cobblestone alleys of the villageโfill with open cellars, shops, markets, and banquet tables. Strolling through the alleys, you will discover glimpses of rural life, artisans demonstrating ancient crafts, and cellars offering tastings. The atmosphere is enriched by photo exhibitions, folk music, historical re-enactments, and theatrical performances that animate the small squares and hidden corners.
The festival is designed for all ages: in the squares, you will find marching bands, acrobats, musicians, jugglers, and street performers, while the scent of roasted chestnuts and traditional sweets accompanies visitors on their way. Each edition confirms "Lungo le Antiche Rue" as an event capable of combining the pleasure of authentic flavors with the charm of history and the folk traditions of the Marsica and Valle Roveto areas.
Organized by the Pro Loco in collaboration with the Municipality of Civitella Roveto, the festival has grown over time to become a benchmark in the Abruzzo autumn calendar, attracting visitors and campers from all over Italy. It is an ideal opportunity to discover the village, its hospitality, and one of the most iconic products of the L'Aquila hinterland.
The 2026 edition of Lungo le Antiche Rue in Civitella Roveto, in the province of L'Aquila, does not yet have confirmed official dates. Following the tradition of the event, it is expected to take place in October, with the usual tribute to the Roscetta Chestnut of Valle Roveto and the autumn flavors of the village. The detailed program will be announced by the Pro Loco and the Municipality in the weeks leading up to the event.
Civitella Roveto is located in the Valle Roveto, in the province of L'Aquila. By car, it is accessible via the A24/A25 motorway (exits towards Marsica) and the state road that runs up the Liri river valley. The event takes place in the village's historic center, with parking available in the surrounding areas.
The event is traditionally held in October, over the course of a weekend. Chestnuts, desserts, and local products can be purchased at the stalls and cellars along the village streets.
We recommend wearing comfortable footwear for walking along the cobblestone streets of the historic center. To confirm the dates and program for the current edition, it is useful to check the channels of the Municipality and the Pro Loco of Civitella Roveto.
