The barrel race in the medieval village of Suvereto
In the heart of the Livorno Maremma, perched among the olive groves and vineyards of the Val di Cornia, the medieval village of Suvereto (Livorno province, Tuscany) preserves one of the most authentic and thrilling re-enactments on the Tuscan coast: the Palio di Santa Croce, known to all as the Palio delle Botti (Barrel Race). Held every year in May to honor the Holy Cross, it transforms the narrow, paved streets of the historic center into a breathtaking racecourse.
The barrel race is a folk competition between teams of spingitori (pushers). In pairs, competitors must guide and push wooden barrels weighing about five quintals (500 kg) along a challenging route filled with inclines, sharp turns, and uneven cobblestones in the heart of the medieval village. It is not just about strength; it requires technique, balance, and teamwork to maintain control of the barrel and beat the opponents. Both men's and women's teams compete in semi-finals and finals while the crowd cheers from along the route.
The Suvereto Palio has deep roots: the community's ancient statutes from as early as the 17th century cited the Palio as an "ancient custom," with festivities lasting an entire week. The tradition was revived in 1984 thanks to the Amici di Suvereto association. After the first few years, due to safety concerns regarding the road surface, organizers chose to highlight the region's great winemaking heritage with the barrel race, which has since become the symbol of the festival.
In Suvereto, the barrel race is held twice a year: the Palio di Santa Croce in May, in honor of the patron saint, and the Palio dell'Imperatore in August. The Suvereto experience also served as the model for the National Palio of the Barrels of the Wine Cities, established in 2007.
The Palio is more than just a race. From the afternoon, the historic center comes alive with people strolling, enjoying snacks in the square, and awaiting the start of the race, soaking in an atmosphere rarely found elsewhere. The day is accompanied by flag-wavers, musicians, and historical costume groups like the Sbandieratori di Santa Croce and the Cavalieri di Ildebrandino. In the evening, the celebration continues with the grand Palio dinner, bars, and music in one of the most beautiful squares in this corner of Tuscany.
The 2026 Palio delle Botti di Santa Croce was held on Saturday, May 16, 2026, in the historic center of Suvereto. A day entirely dedicated to tradition, with the race of the 500-kilogram barrels along the steep cobblestone streets of the village, including both men's and women's competitions, flag-wavers, and historical costume groups. In the evening, the celebration continued with the grand Palio dinner and music in the heart of the village.
Dinner location: Parco degli Ulivi, Via Giuseppe di Vittorio 25, Suvereto.
