Theatre, dance, and performing arts across the villages of the Tuscan Metalliferous Hills
The Geothermal Hills Festival is one of the most original performing arts festivals in Tuscany. Born in 2012 in Pomarance as a small summer theatre season at the Rocca di Sillano, it has grown into a widespread festival that spans five villages in the geothermal district: in addition to Monterotondo Marittimo, in the Province of Grosseto, the event reaches Pomarance, Castelnuovo Val di Cecina, Monteverdi Marittimo, and Montieri. Since 2021, it has been recognised by the Ministry of Culture as a festival of national importance.
The fifteenth edition takes place from 14 May to 11 July 2026, with the guiding theme "The Beauty of the Margins": an invitation to view inland territories, small villages, and peripheries as places of value and creation, rather than marginal spaces. The programme includes 44 events in total, with 6 world premieres and 4 national previews, under the artistic direction of Marco Pasquinucci and produced by Officine Papage.
The village of Monterotondo Marittimo hosts some of the most refined proposals of the festival, distributed between the Teatro del Ciliegio and the Sala Ex Acli. Highlights in the municipality include the Kauwa-Auwa company's show "Scavare e togliere. Esistere รจ una necessitร spaziale", the Officine Papage production "In compagnia dell'ape Sunny" dedicated to children, and a day of theatre with multiple evening performances. The festival also presents the itinerant show "L'Imbarazzo dell'Infinito" in Monterotondo and other villages, a one-on-one theatrical experience inspired by the universe of Isaac Asimov.
The Geothermal Hills Festival is not just about theatre. A dense programme of walks, workshops for adults and children, aperitif-dinners, and meetings with artists surrounds the performances, designed to create social opportunities between the community, the public, and the companies. The festival collaborates with the Metalliferous Hills National Park, recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark, enhancing a unique landscape made of steam vents, geothermal phenomena, and ancient mining villages.
Attending the festival in Monterotondo Marittimo means combining the quality of a national-level programme with the discovery of a lesser-known corner of Tuscany, far from mass tourism circuits. Between geothermal energy, nature, and culture, the Geothermal Hills Festival is the ideal opportunity to experience the hilly Maremma territory with a fresh perspective.
