Contemporary theatre in the geothermal villages of Tuscany, between Montieri and Boccheggiano
The Geothermal Hills Festival is one of the most original contemporary theatre festivals in Tuscany. Created to bring culture to the small towns of the geothermal area between the provinces of Pisa and Grosseto, the festival is organized by Officine Papage and unfolds as a widespread journey across five municipalities: Pomarance, Castelnuovo Val di Cecina, Monteverdi Marittimo, Monterotondo Marittimo, and Montieri. Village squares, historic theatres, and the landscapes of the hills become the stage for performances, walks, workshops, and meetings.
In the territory of the Municipality of Montieri, in the Province of Grosseto, the festival primarily chooses the evocative Piazza Sant'Agostini, in the hamlet of Boccheggiano, an ancient mining village in the Colline Metallifere. Here, under the summer sky of Southern Tuscany, spectators attend theatrical evenings immersed in an atmosphere of silence and beauty, far from the major circuits but close to the most authentic soul of the region.
The festival embraces a precise idea: what appears lateral and fragile — in territories as in biographies, in languages as in creative processes — actually reveals unprecedented perspectives. This is the philosophy behind the theme "The Beauty of the Margins," which guides the programming towards a theatre capable of speaking to villages and communities, with attention to accessibility and inclusion through the Open section, accessible performances, and workshops for schools.
Each edition offers dozens of events with Italian and international artists, including world premieres and national previews. Alongside evening performances, the programme includes theatrical walks, artist residencies in the villages, aperitif-dinners, and meetings with authors. In Montieri, there is also space for the itinerant device "The Embarrassment of the Infinite" by Officine Papage, a work conceived for one spectator at a time and inspired by the world of Isaac Asimov.
Attending the festival is also an opportunity to explore a little-known corner of Tuscany: the Colline Metallifere and the geothermal area, with their medieval villages, scenic trails, steam manifestations, and centuries-old mining tradition. Montieri and Boccheggiano, with their ancient stones and views, offer a rare setting for a cultural experience that weaves together theatre, landscape, and community.
The fifteenth edition of the Geothermal Hills Festival is held from May 14th to July 11th, 2026, under the artistic direction of Marco Pasquinucci and the organizational direction of Annastella Giannelli. The programme features 44 events, with 6 world premieres and 4 national previews, distributed between Pomarance, Castelnuovo Val di Cecina, Monteverdi Marittimo, Monterotondo Marittimo, and Montieri.
In Montieri, at Piazza Sant'Agostini in Boccheggiano, the highlight is Saturday, June 20th, 2026, at 9:30 PM with Mauro Pescio in "Malamente" (national preview), a show in which the podcaster recounts the shadows of current events and the human soul between reality and fiction. The Montieri territory also hosts, between May 28th and July 11th, the itinerant device "The Embarrassment of the Infinite" by Officine Papage, conceived for a single spectator at a time.
General festival programme: inauguration on May 14th with Teatro Magro ("I saw Van Gogh"); June 4th Teatro da Garagem ("Metamorphoses", national premiere); June 14th Stefano Massini ("The Search for Happiness"); June 18th Paola Consani ("Waiting for Godot"); June 25th Valentina Dal Mas ("Luisa"); June 26th Oscar De Summa ("I'm Looking For"); August 5th Andrea Pennacchi ("Shakespeare & Me").
Montieri and the hamlet of Boccheggiano are located in the Colline Metallifere, in the Province of Grosseto. By car, they can be reached from the SS439 and the provincial roads of the Alta Maremma; the nearest train station is Massa Marittima/Follonica, with a continuation by car. Performances are held mainly in Piazza Sant'Agostini in Boccheggiano.
Reservations and ticketing via email at [email protected] or WhatsApp/SMS at +39 334 2698007. Tickets are available online on the liveticket.it circuit. Advance booking is recommended due to the limited capacity of the squares.
The evenings take place outdoors: comfortable clothing and a light jacket for cool evenings are recommended. It is possible to combine the visit with exploring the villages and trails of the Colline Metallifere.
