The challenge between the five districts that brings Ceva's spring to life
The Palio dei Rioni of Ceva is one of the most cherished events in the calendar of the Municipality of Ceva, in the Province of Cuneo, in the heart of south-western Piedmont. Every spring, the town in the Cebano region divides into its five historic districts, which challenge each other in a long competition made up of games, feats of strength and wit, social gatherings, and plenty of healthy local rivalry. More than just a simple race, it is a community festival that strengthens bonds between residents and sparks pride in belonging to each neighborhood.
Contending for the coveted Palio banner are five districts, each with its own colors and supporters:
Each district mobilizes dozens of participants of all ages, from children to adults, to accumulate points in the various challenges and try to secure the final victory.
The heart of the event lies in the games, which blend tradition, physical skill, and creativity. Among the most anticipated trials are the tug-of-war, the relay race with wheels, the Rionerino tournament, the evocative treasure hunt winding through the city streets, and more playful challenges like the opening parade of the districts. There is also room for innovation, with new games introduced each year to keep the fun fresh. The scoring does not only reward speed: preparation, participation, and the team spirit of each district are also carefully evaluated.
Throughout the event, the squares and streets of Ceva come alive with musical aperitifs, parades, social gatherings, and community dinners. The proclamation of the winning district and the presentation of the Palio banner represent the climax, experienced with great emotion by the entire citizenry. It is a precious opportunity to discover the authentic atmosphere of a Piedmontese town and to experience firsthand a tradition that unites entire generations.
Situated at the confluence of the Tanaro and Cevetta rivers, Ceva is the main hub of the Cebano, a land of passage between the Langhe, the Maritime Alps, and Liguria. Known for its history, its famous porcini mushrooms, and its typical products, the town offers visitors the charm of a still-genuine Piedmont. The Palio dei Rioni is the most vibrant expression of this local identity.
Ceva is located in the Province of Cuneo, along the A6 Turin-Savona motorway (Ceva exit). By train, it is reachable via the Ceva station, on the Turin-Savona and Ceva-Ormea lines.
The events are held in the historic center and in various locations around the city: Via Marenco, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, the Sferisterio, and the municipal sports halls.
The event is organized by the Associazione Palio dei Rioni di Ceva in collaboration with the Municipality of Ceva. Registration for the trials takes place through the respective districts.
