About Palio dei Draghi

The Palio dei Draghi is a historic dragon boat competition that brings the waters of Lake Caldonazzo in Valsugana to life every summer. From the Spiaggia Pescatore, crews from across Trentino compete over 500 meters, featuring thrilling races, entertainment, and the Palio Pink day dedicated to women's wellness. This popular sporting event combines competition, celebration, and a love for the region, serving as a stage of the UISP Trentino Provincial Championship.

The Palio dei Draghi, a Caldonazzo tradition

On Lake Caldonazzo, in the heart of Valsugana, the Palio dei Draghi has been one of the most anticipated sporting events of the Trentino summer for over thirty years. The event brings the discipline of dragon boat to the lake's waters—long, Chinese-style boats where dozens of paddlers row in unison to the rhythm of a bow drum. Originating in China, where the practice has been cultivated for millennia, these large dragon-shaped boats have found a spectacular and beloved setting in the alpine basin of the Municipality of Caldonazzo.

Where and how it takes place

The competition's headquarters is the Spiaggia Pescatore on the shores of Lake Caldonazzo, which transforms into a theater of challenges, cheering, and festivities for an entire weekend. Crews compete over the classic 500-meter distance, divided into various categories: open, women's, and junior. Qualifying heats, semi-finals, and finals follow throughout the day, with large crowds gathering along the shore to cheer on their teams. The event is a historic stage of the UISP Trentino Provincial Championship for dragon boat racing.

The Palio Pink

Beyond the purely competitive aspect, the Palio dei Draghi has developed a strong social soul with the Palio Pink, a day dedicated to women's psycho-physical well-being, particularly for women who have undergone breast cancer surgery. Pink crews, lighthearted family challenges, open trials, and entertainment make this day a powerful message of sport as a tool for health, inclusion, and rebirth. It is no coincidence that dragon boat racing is internationally recognized as a symbolic discipline for survivors.

Sport, celebration, and the region

The Palio is much more than a race: it is a local festival that unites sport, entertainment, social life, environmental respect, and a love for the Valsugana region. The competitions are accompanied by entertainment, children's activities, demonstrations, dinners, and music that keep participants engaged until the evening. The event is organized by A.S.D. Dragon Sport Caldonazzo in collaboration with UISP Trentino and with the support of local administrations. In some historic editions, the event was also known as the Lake Caldonazzo Trophy.

An event in Trentino-Alto Adige

Located just a few kilometers from Trento, the Palio dei Draghi is a perfect reason to discover Lake Caldonazzo, one of the warmest swimmable lakes in the Alps, and Valsugana, a land of cycle paths, villages, and nature. Attending the Palio means experiencing a day of authentic sport and popular celebration in Trentino-Alto Adige, set against the backdrop of mountains reflecting on the water.
