The medieval archery challenge between the four Rioni of Pescia, featuring a historical pageant, flag-wavers, and archery contests in Piazza Mazzini.
In the town of Pescia, in the Province of Pistoia, along the valley of the river of the same name in the heart of the Tuscan Valdinievole, the Palio degli Arcieri City of Pescia is the most heartfelt and identity-defining event of the year. Every first Sunday of September, the city dresses up to celebrate its significant medieval history: the streets and squares of the center fill with the colors and banners of the four historic Rioni, while costume parades, flag-wavers, and archers turn back the clock by several centuries.
The roots of this tradition date back to the first half of the 14th century, when Pescia fell under Florentine influence. Popular memory links the event to February 6, 1339, when the citizenry chose Saint Dorothy as the city's patron saint; the festivities included an ancient Palio dei Berberi, a race that continued until the early 16th century before fading away. The modern event, created to commemorate that history, was revived in the late 20th century: in 1981, the Compagnia Arcieri Città di Pescia was founded with the dual purpose of promoting archery and honoring the city's Palio tradition.
At the heart of the contest are the four Rioni into which the city is ideally divided, each with its own colors and community:
The four Rioni compete for the Cencio, the painted banner that the winning Rione keeps for an entire year. The challenge is decided by the archers' duel: the marksmen of the four districts face off before the city, and the most accurate Rione wins the coveted Palio.
The Palio is not just the final competition, but a full week of celebrations. Festivities open the weekend before with events and tournaments, then move into full swing from Monday to Thursday with the propitiatory dinners of the four Rioni, moments of conviviality and preparation for the challenge. Friday evening is dedicated to the evocative Blessing of the Palio, the League's banners, and the four Rioni, followed by the nighttime historical parade. Saturday is often reserved for themed re-enactments and competitions, such as the exhibition dedicated to the beauty and elegance of women in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
The highlight is the first Sunday of September. In the morning, in Piazza Mazzini, the lottery draw and the opening of the medieval market take place. In the afternoon, around 3:00 PM, the grand historical parade begins: over seven hundred costumed participants march through the streets of the center, including ladies, knights, musicians, flag-wavers, and sword fighters, in a setting that evokes the Renaissance era. The challenge culminates in the late afternoon, around 5:00 PM, with the archery competition where one of the Rioni wins the Cencio.
Experiencing the Palio degli Arcieri is also an opportunity to discover Pescia, a city historically divided between its religious and civil sides by the two banks of the river, famous for its ancient papermaking tradition and for being one of Italy's most important floricultural centers. Between history, spectacle, and local identity, the Palio is one of the most characteristic re-enactments in the Province of Pistoia and all of Tuscany.
The 2026 edition of the Palio degli Arcieri City of Pescia has its main moment on Sunday, September 6, 2026, as confirmed by the support of the Fondazione Caript as part of Cantiere Cultura 2026: the day "will involve the entire community of Pescia in the historical parade and the archers' challenge".
As per tradition, the week of the Palio includes the propitiatory dinners of the four Rioni, the Blessing of the Palio and the Gonfalons with the nighttime historical parade, the Saturday re-enactments, and the grand final Sunday with a historical parade in the afternoon and an archery competition in Piazza Mazzini. The detailed program with times and initiatives is published by the Municipality of Pescia and the League of Rioni in the weeks preceding the event.
Pescia can be reached by car via the A11 Firenze-Mare motorway (exit Chiesina Uzzanese or Montecatini Terme). The city is served by the Pescia railway station, on the Florence-Lucca-Viareggio line, just a few minutes' walk from the historic center.
The heart of the event is Piazza Giuseppe Mazzini, the large elongated square in the historic center, where the historical parade and the archery competition take place. The food area is set up in Piazza del Grano.
Access to the square and the historic center is free. To watch from a reserved seat during some evenings and on the final day, a ticket is required (in recent years, approximately 5 euros for Friday and Saturday evenings and approximately 15 euros for the Sunday grandstands). For updated prices and the final program, it is recommended to check with the Municipality of Pescia and the official Palio channels.
