A month of music, entertainment, and tradition along the Via Francigena
The Altopascio July Festival is the flagship summer event of the Municipality of Altopascio, located in the Province of Lucca, in the heart of Tuscany. For over a month, from June 24th through the end of July (with an extension into early August), the town and its surrounding hamlets transform into a vast, open-air stage featuring concerts, comedy, family shows, outdoor cinema, nature excursions, and traditional patron saint celebrations.
For centuries, Altopascio has been a vital stop on the Via Francigena, the ancient pilgrimage route to Rome. This identity as a village of hospitality, preserved by the Order of the Knights of the Tau, is still palpable in the town squares today, giving the summer festival a unique character that weaves together contemporary events and historical memory. Fittingly, one evening is dedicated to the pilgrimage with "Dining on the Francigena," and the Francigena Chamber Orchestra is a standout among the musical offerings.
The program alternates between big names in Italian entertainment and popular events designed for all ages. The main evenings take place primarily in Piazza Ricasoli and Piazza degli Ospitalieri, while the historic center hosts parties, tribute bands, and treasure hunts. Alongside the concerts, there are themed evenings, parades, traveling cinema in hamlets like Badia Pozzeveri, and nature activities at the Sibolla Oasis.
The most heartfelt moment is dedicated to San Jacopo, the patron saint of Altopascio, featuring a concert in his honor, a procession, and the Medieval Altopascio re-enactment, which transports the village back to the era of the Knights of the Tau with pageants, markets, and historical settings. The festival concludes with the traditional tombola and a fireworks display lighting up the Lucchese sky.
The Altopascio July Festival is now a staple of the summer in the Lucca Plain, drawing crowds from across the region thanks to its rich and varied calendar.
The 2026 edition of the Altopascio July Festival offers over a month of free events in Altopascio (LU), spread across the historic center, the main squares, and the hamlets. The calendar, presented by the Municipality of Altopascio, combines big names in entertainment, themed evenings, nature initiatives, and the traditional patronal celebrations of San Jacopo, culminating in the Medieval Altopascio re-enactment and the final fireworks display.
The program is enriched by traveling cinema in the hamlets and side initiatives. For detailed, updated times and locations, please refer to the official channels of the Municipality of Altopascio and ioscelgoaltopascio.it.
