Medieval animation evenings in Gemona
Tempus Est Jocundum is the medieval historical reenactment that every year, on the first weekend of August, takes Gemona del Friuli back in time. The historic center of the city, in the Province of Udine, transforms into an authentic medieval village: among the ancient streets and squares, lively markets, taverns, shows, and costumed characters come to life, rediscovering the customs and crafts of that era.
The heart of the event is the historical parade that crosses the center with numerous groups from all over the region and beyond. Every evening, sword duels, skill challenges between the villages, fire-eater performances, dances, street theater, and interactive workshops on ancient crafts follow one another. Among the most spectacular moments are the fireworks display from the Duomo's bell tower, which seems to ignite in the night, and the reading of the edict by the herald.
There is also a convivial dimension: the taverns offer dishes inspired by medieval cuisine, while the "nobles' banquet" and the evocative "torture chamber" complete an immersive experience. Organized by Pro Loco Pro Glemona together with the Historical Committee, Tempus Est Jocundum is a festival that involves the entire Gemona community and attracts visitors from all over Friuli Venezia Giulia, in a setting made unique by the historic center rebuilt after the 1976 earthquake.
The 33rd edition of Tempus Est Jocundum takes the historic center of Gemona del Friuli back to the Middle Ages from August 1st to 4th, 2026. Four evenings of reenactment with historical parades, costumed groups from all over the region, sword duels, challenges between villages, taverns, fire-eater shows, dances, and street theater, culminating in the famous fireworks display from the Duomo's bell tower.
